Used to be THE start of the jumps season for me, when it was the Charisma Gold Cup day including the Captain Quist Hurdle (once won, unforgettably, by Jinxy Jack, in make-all fashion, on a rare early-season foray south for the Richards-Doughty combo).

Now just a shadow of it’s former self, but still worth a watch.

Quoting myself is a diabolical liberty, I know.

Nice to see the reigning Champion take in the former Captain Quist, even if it was sad to see him beat.

But for the top weight in the former Charisma Gold Cup to be running off 127? Dear, oh dear.

Agreed, Nick – it’s a sign of how denuded that contest has become that it is now just about the worst contest on a card that so many people still refer to as "the (old) Charisma meeting" to this day.

..And this year’s renewal was x-rated stuff, too, collectively "boasting" some of the very worst jumping I’ve seen in a 3m handicap chase at the course for many a year. Petitjean in particular put up the most ignorant display of jumping I think I’ve seen in this sort of grade all season.

I hadn’t used my trusted "my fridge jumps better" quip on air for quite some time. It got quite an airing or two yesterday.

Totally agree, a few years ago it was a top early season handicap and always got a decent field of 3m chasers who wanted to improve as the season progresses and now it has become a dumbed down race.
