If anyone fancies class 5 racing in the snow…
Might pop down myself
January 8, 2010 at 17:29 #268807I see they have scheduled an inspection for half 6.
Any idea how things currently are in that neck of the woods?
January 8, 2010 at 17:35 #268809Im five minute drive away. I think it will be ok. No more real snow forecast tonight (i think)
January 8, 2010 at 17:56 #268812I’m overwhelmed with excitement zzzzzzzzzz
January 8, 2010 at 18:38 #268819Congratulations to Kempton for showing some initiative, to far for me and not exactly my cup of tea the all weather but the management should be applauded nevertheless.
January 8, 2010 at 18:41 #268821Well done by Kempton. Wolverhampton also have free admission throughout January.
January 8, 2010 at 20:42 #268851Good for them, a welcome initiative
Given the inclement weather and travel problems, a dramatic increase in spectators can’t really be envisaged but it would be nice to believe that the BHA – and other racecourses – will be monitoring the effect free entry does have on numbers.
You never know it may just be the catalyst needed to persuade other courses to experiment with free/cheap days when it’s balmy and green again. Actually been surprised that Towcester has been alone for so long.
It would also be nice to think the book-keepers at Kempton and Southwell will make the effort to weigh-up loss of gate receipts against the increase in profit netted from increased spend on-course. And to make the information public, or at least to the BHA
January 8, 2010 at 20:52 #268856I agree, Drone, though, sadly, last year, very few folk turned up at Wolverhampton, despite free admission.
January 8, 2010 at 21:02 #268858But thats because Wolverhampton, Kempton, Lingfield and Southwell race too often to get the crowds in. The reason tracks like Cartmel, Chester, Perth seem to get good crowds is because they have less fixtures and therefore people look forward more to the next meeting. That would be my theory anyway as you cant the class of racing at Cartmel, for example, is excellent. I dont think entry needs to be free to bring in more people, it just needs to be value for money and time. Kempton has had loads of racing in past two months so locals may have had there fill of it…ditto Wolves, Southwell and Lingfield.
January 8, 2010 at 21:34 #268865Also, unlike Chester , Cartmel and Perth, Kempton is surrounded by competing tracks. Sandown, windsor, epsom, Ascot for a start. Lingfield and newbury reachable too
Its because of that as much as anything that the AW has been a hard sell. Frankly the AW track that should have been implemented at that time was Great leighs…properly of course. Essex is starved of racing
January 8, 2010 at 21:50 #268869Or it should have been at Musselburgh? Why is there not an all weather track north of Southwell? Southwell isn’t even halfway up the uk geographically!

How do the crowds compare at the AW tracks during winter?
I get the impression, perhaps falsely due to Max’s ebullience
, that Southwell is more popular than WolverAnd Lingers more so than Kempton?

827 people doesn’t sound like much (because it isn’t much) but I don’t see it as 827 people there, I see it as 21173 tall b*****s not stood in front of me.

Be careful in the backstreets of Wolverhampton. If you’re shorter than 5’8", Richard Guest might come past in his ‘special van’ to offer you sweets & before you know it your on a horses back in a 6f seller!
