Desperately sad news of the loss of this young man. I don’t do Social Media and shocked to read here that people could be so cruel.
Catherine thanks for posting the link to the Birdie cartoon it says it all and is such poignant reminder that horses miss their grooms as much as grooms and riders miss their horses.
I was thinking back to the loss of young Jack De Bromhead and how his family would be reliving his loss on hearing this news.
It’s been a terribly sad week in racing and the loss of young Keagan Kirkby has been heartbreaking to read.
RIP Keagan … there’s a beautiful horse, you might know, waiting to meet you at the Rainbow Bridge his name is Hermes Allen, ride free across the clouds.💓Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...February 7, 2024 at 00:16 #1680206I’ve got a book called Dawn Till Dusk which is about the work riders behind great horses. It made me realise how important they are and what a difference they make to a stable. Racing has lost one of the best in Keagan. Heartbreaking.
February 7, 2024 at 01:34 #1680208I can’t think of anything more apt than that which Jac (Triptych) wrote in her above post.
As Moe says, it’s heartbreaking.February 8, 2024 at 21:06 #1680389Befair I rode from about five years old. I’ve ridden racehorses away from training, cobs, jumpers and plods. The lad in my profile pic was the pride of my heart for 25 years. It’s a truly incredible feeling when it goes right, and the worst in the world when it goes wrong. I had a broken back and have had a lifetime of pain as proof – but I’d still get back on one tomorrow. It’s the ultimate joy and even though you know the risks, you still do it.
This young man was undoubtedly having the time of his life until the last few seconds when it all went wrong. It’s unspeakably sad. May he rest in peace – and I hope if there’s an afterlife, he’s galloping under the sun on the other side.February 9, 2024 at 13:50 #1680460Has the exact cause of his death been determined? I mean a horse running through the plastic wing of a fences happens quite often in NH racing and wasn’t of much concern so far. If every plastic wing would be that lethal I’m sure the BHB would have initiated some kind of examination to look into the risks of jumping obstacles.
Probably something else went badly wrong too.
February 9, 2024 at 17:48 #1680488I think falling from a horse always carries a risk of death Ruby, especially one travelling at speed. Doubt the wing was a factor apart from maybe contributing to Keagan being unseated, though every aspect is rightly being investigated. Seems like a very unlucky and tragic accident to me.
February 15, 2024 at 19:33 #1681177Nice tribute on BBC SE news tonight, including interview with Paul Nicholls (also wretched reporter standing at the entrance to Charing, in the dark, for reasons known only to the producers of local TV news). Reported that there had “only” been 7 PtP deaths in recent times (I forget the actual stat). That seems very high to me. Maybe not in terms of equestrian fatalities overall, but surely high compared to professional racing.
February 15, 2024 at 20:26 #1681184From the Point-to-Point Authority (PPA)
“SOUTH EAST CLUB – CHARING – SUNDAY 25TH FEBRUARY – MEETING CALLED OFF
Following the tragic events at Charing on 4th February, investigations remain ongoing, with the BHA and PPA working alongside the local Environmental Health team. The BHA and PPA have deemed that the next fixture for that course – planned for 25th February is too soon – and so it has been called off. It should be noted that this is not a reflection on the course itself, or the team that run the fixtures, who did everything they could and more on the day, as they always do.”
