    Greatest Ever?
    Frankel probably, Kauto possibly.
    Kauto 8 Frankel 9

    Versatility
Kauto achieved the remarkable honour of being the top-rated chaser at 2m and 3m in the same season which says it all. Frankel was a top-class miler/10f horse but we’ll never know if he could have performed at 12f. He did dig in brilliantly to win when faced with really soft ground however.
    Kauto 9 Frankel 7

    Puntability
Frankel would have netted you a meagre £5 to £1 level stakes being odds-against only once (his first start) in his career. Kauto had a boom year in his last season with wins at 6-1 and 3-1 from his three races. He also won at 36-1 in France! Fair to say that Frankel was the better ‘mortgage’ horse.
    Kauto 9 Frankel 9

    Longevity
Obviously Kauto, who was exceptional even by NH standards, being high-class from four until twelve. However, three full seasons for a top-class Flat horse is probably all one can expect nowadays so Frankel doesn’t entirely pale in comparison.

    Value To Racing’s Image
As you are all aware, the general public is only interested in racist soccerball players (and umpires now) so typically neither of these set the world alight media wise. Frankel made the bigger impact due to his more condensed career.
    Kauto 2 Frankel 3

    Sex Appeal
Both are well-muscled with firm thighs and come-to-bed looks. Smashing fetlocks too.
    Kauto 8 Frankel 8

    Opposition
On the day of his final race, Excelebration and Cirrus Des Aigles gave a whopping boost to Frankel’s form. Beating the former 11l in the Queen Anne looks almost absurd now and may look even better after Excelebration runs in the States. Kauto’s rivals read like a who’s-who of modern chasing over a number of distances and he’s generally come out on top.

    Scarves ‘n’ Flags
Like the return of an unwelcome season, the appearance of tacky, colours-themed shite is quite clearly the future on British racecourses. Best Mate started it but Kauto is possibly the king to date. The sight of guards dressed in Frankel colours in the centre of London was just a bit mental.
    Kauto 10 Frankel 5

    Trainer
Both Nicholls and Cecil are trainers of the highest class. Nicholls has shepherded Kauto’s many seasons superbly, albeit developing a somewhat terse way of dealing with queries. He handled the pre-Gold Cup injury badly. Cecil has had to train his superstar whilst battling very serious illness but has been accused by some of conservatism.
    Kauto 8 Frankel 9

    Jockey
I know nothing about jockeys. They’re probably both Irish. I presume they’re quite good too.
    Kauto 9 Frankel 9

    Owner
Clive Smith strikes me as a bit of an oddball but he’s been quite open about Kauto and has spoken about him as a ‘public’ horse. You probably wouldn’t want to go out for a pint with him though. Frankel’s owner is Khalid ibn Abdullah, who comes from a family with interests in most areas apart from democracy. You certainly wouldn’t want to go for a pint with him.
    Kauto 5 Frankel 0

    Final Score

A very nice post indeed. I would go with the longevity and the fact that Kauto had nine great seasons in him. Plus his life was a lot more in danger than Frankel’s. So he deserves a lot of credit for retiring in one piece. Nevertheless both athletes merit the greatest respect and we should count us lucky to have lived in their era.
Happy retiremen to both of you boys!

Kauto has achieved many things no other horse has, so it’s got to be Kauto. Frankel is maybe the best horse ever but he hasn’t done anything unique.

    Frankel = Apple
    Kauto = Pear

The two cannot be objectively compared and in the final analysis it comes down to whether you prefer Cider or Perry!!!

First horse to win successive Sussex Stakes
Highest rated horse of all time (Timeform, RPR)
Most consecutive Group 1 wins in Europe. Joint best in world.

He hasnt done anything unique? Red rag to a bull with me!!!

Loved Kauto. Incredible animal. Paul is right. Why bother comparing the two? Impossible anyway.

"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"

Daft question really (IMHO). You really cannot compare the two horses. Everything about them and their racing careers is so, so different.

Frankel – a truly blazing star but a short lived career on the course, as is the way with our stars of the flat, and his true worth will be revealed by his progeny. I hope he throws some good ‘uns for us to appreciate in the future.

Kauto – more of a long- burning ember that gave a glowing light to our lives for so many wonderful years. I hope they find something interesting for him to enjoy in his semi (I hope) retirement. Maybe he’ll follow his rival Denman into team-chasing. Can’t imagine him festering in a furry coat in a field for the next 18 or more (hopefully!) years.

I said you could not compare but, as an NH fan, I think I just did make a decision on this one. Kauto all the way! :)
