Very well done to Katchit & the syndicate. It must be great to own a horse that’s so honest & almost always gives his running. It was a really brave run by your horse.
August 22, 2008 at 02:14 #177612Usually when a purist says a horse is a class animals hw will be referring to horses who have something special. In the main H is correct when he says it refers to "Ability". Arkle, Desert Orchid, Kauto Star, Denman, Bula, Persian War, Istabraq and most recently Master Minded and of course Binocular all have/had one thing in common. It’s not what they did but the way that they did it.
Breeding and cost simply don’t come into it. It is performances like Kauto Star’s King George win when he left good horses like Vic and co struggling in his wake and did it with such ease it would knock your socks of.
Master Minded’s performace in the QMCC was like something out of a fairy tale. The first 5yo in history not only won the race but did it with such style he turned ratings on their head.
Footnote: One should never forget the word class can change to effin mule very quickly
August 23, 2008 at 10:15 #177778Fist, it does your credibility absolutely no good, when you casually drop Binocular’s name in amongst the likes of Desert Orchid, Kauto Start, Denman etc, when discussing the subject of class.
I’ll concede that Binocular looks useful, appears to have plenty of further potential, and could very well turn out to be top-class. But it’s frankly ridiculous to suggest that he is somehow already a peer of any of the horses you mentioned.

denman binocular and master minded shouldn’t even be in that list
denman has to win a few more group 1 races before he can be up there but i have no doubt he will be there ,binocular is a young horse with a big career ahead of him but thats all so far and masterminded is a horse that has won two races of group standard but looks to be special but only "looks"
August 25, 2008 at 03:27 #178090Denman should most certainly be in the list. How many horses can you nmae who have won 14 races on the trot icluding a Hennessy and a Gold Cup.
I am Kauto Star’s biggest fan but one has to be realistic. The Gold Cup is the race that get’s great horses recognition and unless Kauto bounces right back to his best Denman will win the Gold Cup again barring accidents. I happen to think Kauto will come back as he is tough as nails but according to the betting I am one of only a few.
Binocular is one very special horse and as anyone on here will tell you I said so right after his first race.
IMO We could be treated to one of the best Champion Hurdles of all time in 2009 if all goes to plan. After which time, I am confident you and every other doubter will be in agreement with myself.
Master Minded certainly deserves a mention being the only 5yo ever to win the QMCC. I admit he beat nothing but he beat nothing is fantastic style. He is potentially the next Arkle of racing, albeit at a different distance. That is if his crazy trainer sticks to 2 miles. He has a huge bridge to cross in the shape of Tidal Bay who will be the best he has ever raced against. If he can defeat him in the same manner he as he won the QMCC this year I can’t see him not winning 3,4 or even 5 championships.
Perhaps on the last 2 you are correct and they shouldn’t be in the list but let’s not get silly by ommiting Denman
