I totally agree with Barry. These races are not just trials for Cheltenahm, they’re major races in their own right and should be recognised as such. Much as I love the Cheltenham Festival I get fed up reading race reports saying things like “it’s a good trial for Cheltenham” all the flipping time. Give these races the recognition they deserve.
November 12, 2022 at 21:03 #1622858Improved prize money, especially for 2nd and 3rd place would be a big help to the Grade One races prior to Cheltenham.
Perhaps get a sponsor and make them a series with prizes for the top trainers, jockeys and owners based on points.
November 12, 2022 at 21:30 #1622861The naming of both races and racehorses is at an all-time low.
In the world of horses, owners who can’t summon the creative imagination to give their horses names linked to sire and dam – rather than successions of Bollin, Sizing or Highway One O Whatevers – should have their assets seized and be deported.
And racecourses who call races Trial, and/or have multiple contests carrying the Triumph, Ballymore or Albert Bartlett prefix should surrender their CoC to the authorities for similar treatment.
Give both horses and races authentic, unique, names or leave the country.
I can’t be more reasonable and fair minded than that.

North Yorkshire, Devon, Highland etc. There’s far too many of them and often run for poor prize money.
November 13, 2022 at 07:14 #1622888An excellent addition, sir.

Maybe, just maybe that is something to think about, so horses have to run to qualify…..
Yes, the Tingle Creek is great in its own right, and should be the mid season 2m Chasing championship, as should the 3m King George – and makes the Betfair Lancashire Chase redundant.
For the Hurdlers, there is the Christmas Hdle at Kempton, plus the Bula and/or Fighting Fifth…
