I think he does get 10f. If he’s to change trip then maybe he will go to 12f, and not 8f at Ascot.
August 18, 2009 at 19:01 #244556Won easily in the end, will never trounce a field, just does enough, different class
He just set a World Record for 10.5f.
August 18, 2009 at 19:18 #244559I disagree that Sea The Stars’ wins haven’t called for him in sixth gear yet – I think Kieran Fallon believes he is still largely untapped, for instance.
That’s just Sea The Stars’ style – his performances are very unassuming, but he has dug deep today IMO and same for the Eclipse and the Derby.
He will continue to lift his game when required. Never in doubt of finding that little extra.
The best horse I have seen in my 6 years at the track.
August 18, 2009 at 19:18 #244560How can anyone say MCM doesn’t stay on that evidence? thats like saying Tyson Gay isn’t a 100 metre runner. Just beaten by a superior horse simple.
August 18, 2009 at 19:26 #244562That was a good performance by sts, setting a new record of a fast pace. But i dont think i would be taking a short price with him in the irish champion in not even 3 weeks time, thats why i reckon ballydoyle ran 2 pacemakers to make it a tough fast pace and this race might of taken a lot out of sts and it wont be any easier in 18 days at lepoardstown
August 18, 2009 at 19:46 #244566Oxx wont run him in 18 days if he has even the slightest doubt about his regenerating from this exertion.
This is truly a superior race horse and any doubter simply has no clue. In the days of Brigadier Gerard et.al. they’d have been hailing him as a true champion and rightly so. Form, times, class, heart anything you want to look at is of the highest standard. Ballydoyle has thrown everything and the kitchen sink at him and he has not blinked. Fame and Glory cant even be mentioned as being in the same universe imo.

A great ride by Johnny Murtagh, and beaten on the day by a better horse, but anyone who believes that STS "was only doing enough" is plainly ignoring the 5 or 6 good cracks he was given in not many more strides to assert. He had a hard race today, and wouldn’t surprise me at all if it were to prove his last.
Though I’m no great believer in Fame And Glory or the Coolmore hype-machine, that was a pretty convincing post-race interview with Michael Tabor, who gives the impression they think him much better than MCM.
4 superstar 3yo’s in one season? – my cup truly doth runneth over.
August 18, 2009 at 20:57 #244589my ratings before Tartan bearer nr
149 sea the stars
141 tartan bearer nr
139 mastercraftsman
132 set sail
132 georgebernardshaw
had backed sea the stars at 1/2 before tartan withdrawalJust interested, not trying to be smart…but I find it difficult to see how you can have had STS 10 points ahead of MCM but yet MCM only 7 ahead of Set Sail and Georgebernardshaw ??

a bit of fun and not to be taken to seriously.August 18, 2009 at 22:32 #244606A fascinating thread, with divided opinion from some good judges, obviously you are either in one camp or the other,if you are a fan of Mastercraftsman or Sea the stars! The STS supporters only have to mention the 2000gns and say he beat MCM comfortably, whats all the fuss about? STS has since won the Derby and Eclipse,MCM has No chance!! Those of us who are in the MCM camp look a bit deeper than what the stats say! Some think MCM has to have Soft ground! Aidan says he is a better colt on quick, where he can extend that stride of his.MCM was only 90% fit in the Guineas and thats a fact too! A 11/4m is a trip he is crying out for,i am convinced he will get a 11/2m,(Next year)! Tomorrows race will be run to suit MCM, his 6f pacemaker will tear off at a pace suited to a mile,he will then let Set sail take him to the 2f pole where STS will be sat on MCM"s hind quarters,MCM will then kick on maintaining a course record time,STS will come to MCM at the 1f pole looking like the winner, the pace will then start to tell and it will come down to a battle and thats where the race will be won,the horse that will stick his neck out when defeat looks certain!
Mastercraftsman
will prevail! IMO!!
Everything went to plan, except the result, the best horse won,an exceptional horse won, because Mastercraftsman is one hellovahorse!

There can only be one true superstar especially as he has beaten the three others, in two instances, on more than one occasion over different distances. Second the opinion on the ride given by Murtagh but at the same time not Kinane’s best ride ever.
Didn’t see the Tabor interview but I never pay too much attention to what flavor of the moment they are touting. FoG is the last arrow to shoot to avoid multiple defeats for all their star 3yo’s. Over 10 furlongs he wouldn’t stand a chance anyway and I doubt STS will be going to France in October.
August 19, 2009 at 01:11 #244641Just watched it on Sky+.
Thought for a minute he was struggling to get past but once he got into gear he won readily.
I’m not sure he’s a Dancing Brave but he’s certainly within a few pounds of that level IMO.
Exceptional.
August 19, 2009 at 01:45 #244657What surprised me was how fast Mastercraftsman was able to go and put up a valiant effort only for Sea The Stars to just sail by.
Mastercraftsman maybe even better over 10f than the 8f, if he stays in training he will be very hard to beat next year and maybe even sly the KG & QE next year with him.
Kinane just picked his spot, it looked like he was in a spot of bother but won pretty easy, for only 4 runners it was a very good race.

More’s the pity Brendan; had you seen both interviews, you would have known that Michael Tabor made it clear
before
the race that he didn’t think MCM their best prospect for today’s race, and he was quite specific afterwards that he saw FOG as clearly the better horse. A very candid appraisal imo, and certainly more convincing than the usual hyperbole from that quarter

Then again, reet, Tabor had absolutely nothing to lose in ranking Mastercraftsman below Fame And Glory. In fact, it’s just the sort of thing Coolmore would do. Had Mastercraftsman won, Fame And Glory need never have met Sea The Stars again, but now that he’s been beaten and no face lost (as it was a supposedly expected defeat), they’re ready to have another crack with a different horse.
It was an almost predictable speech and one which will no doubt be matched in one form or another should they get the opportunity to pitch Fame And Glory against the champion elect.
As for today’s race, it was utlimately fairly comfortable. I had hoped that Kinane would kick on on Sea The Stars early in the straight, but to see him take three lengths out of Mastercraftsman in the final furlong just showed how superior he really is. And I don’t think he was at his best either, just too good.
One thing I would say, despite York being such a sharp track, is that Sea The Stars gave every indication that he would stay a truly run twelve furlongs. They obviously went a sound pace throughout and, having run quite free early on, the winner showed a blistering turn of foot to cut through the Ballydoyle henchmen and another as he was pulled out around Mastercraftsman.
Top class.
August 19, 2009 at 03:20 #244673I said it before and i will say it again RVW has the class to beat STS in the Breeders cup classic if he,s in front of him turning for home.
As far as FAG is concerned it will be very hard for him to beat STS hes got him in every department apart from stamina and his best shot would be in the arc if they met.August 19, 2009 at 03:22 #244674

Been out and just watched the race.
Horse won well, thought he was beat, combination of MCM running flat out of energy and Sea the Stars picking up like a real racehorse settled the day.
Race ran bang to form so the questions still remain
I’m not taking anything away from the horse by asking the same question that was asked about Zarkava before she ran in the Arc.
Hopefully we will get to see him take on his elders before he retires.
