That was execrable from Latrobe there. I thought he was one of the worst Irish Derby winners I had ever seen and he was pitiful there today. He just didn’t look like he belonged in the race at all.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 22, 2018 at 15:57 #1363784@Stevecaution – Why you think Cracksman wont run in Champions stakes?
August 22, 2018 at 16:16 #1363786You’re right Steve, Latrobe did win a poorish Irish Derby, but was progressive up to this point. Today always likely to find this test of spped too much for him; especially when pace wasn’t a strong one. Little disappointing, but he’s a horse that should be judged at 12f, not a slowish run 10.
Like Goodwood, Without Parole sweated up again and came in to this after looking amiss in the Sussex. St James’s Palace form is obviously better than shown in his last two races. Question mark is whether he can show it again.
I wouldn’t be too quick in taking a price for the Champion Stakes for Roaring Lion. Gosden says he won’t go there if soft or heavy. Suspect Cracksman might replace him in deep ground.

John Gosden said it’s probable that Cracksman goes straight to the Arc. There was talk that he would have a prep race but the thinking is now that he’ll go straight there and that he’s not a horse who needs a race to put him straight.
Based on the way the horse has performed this year, struggling along in his races, I feel the last thing he needs is dropping back in trip to face a young and upcoming colt from his own stable, who has more pace than him.
Cracksman has to get to the Arc anyway and that’s becoming more dubious. The horse didn’t seem to have ground requirements last season but now he needs cut. Best case scenario would be softish ground at Longchamp in October and even then he has to at least run really well. Even if that happens, I doubt he would go to the Champion Stakes unless it was really soft.
Make no mistake, Roaring Lion paralysed Poet’s Word for speed today. You can argue Poet’s Word was a bit unlucky but as often as not horses who get caught out tactically do so because of a lack of tactical pace. Poet’s Word just lacked the gears when he did get out and was only narrowly able to catch a 50/1 shot rated 21 lbs lower rated in Thundering Blue.
I have a feeling Cracksman will fail in the Arc and if he runs poorly there, it could be retirement time. Despite the Poet’s Word defeat not looking perhaps as bad as first thought, Frankie and Johnny were desperately downcast and of a mind that the horse was amiss. I think he’s a poor ante-post bet for the Champion Stakes with so many negatives and the potential for more doom yet. You would be needing decent odds just to turn up.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Thanks for the write-up…I agree with most. Just one thing, if Cracksman goes straight to the Arc, it will perhaps be his last race irrespective of the result. I don’t see him traveling to States for Breeders cup and neither he will run as a 5yo. A sad end to a horse who promised so much in last Champions Stakes.
August 22, 2018 at 17:56 #1363796A bit premature, Austin, playing TAPS for Cracksman. I’m pretty confident he will win an easy ground Arc
August 22, 2018 at 18:14 #1363801Go on the Lion!
A 467/1 treble for me today (see the comp thread for no aftertiming). Would’ve been a great day had Watan won but I’m not complaining. Have to enjoy days like this for all the bad days I’ve had betting this summer.
I just think the Lion loves the long York straight. He travels so well that it suits him to have the pace gradually building like that. It’ll suit Stradivarius for the same reason in my opinion.
I hope the Lion is still in training next season.
August 22, 2018 at 19:04 #1363812Well done backers of the Lion, and happily there seems to be quite a few in here.
That’s a cracking day for you MOM, I had noticed in Nathan’s compy that you had done
rather well today. Good luck for the rest of meeting
August 22, 2018 at 19:41 #1363816One word, MOM…
Nice! You deserve a
Value Is EverythingAugust 22, 2018 at 22:05 #1363832Cheers lads
I’ve always said York is my best betting track (Southwell and Meydan are the worst fwiw).
Hopefully I can have a good next couple of days to finish off what is already a definite profit week.
Two from Sea of Class, Battaash and Stradivarius winning would be nice.
