I know he won last years CH and GN, but JP McManus seems to have vast numbers of moderate horses. Every race seems to have the green-and-gold chugging away in midfield
December 29, 2010 at 14:54 #334178Plenty of dross.
But as Borough Scott of the racingpost said in a article last year. He main enjoyment is landing a real big punt.

Yes v true, but just like with Godolphin he supports the industry so well that people in the media etc won’t have a go at him, they same way they won’t have a go at Godolphin.
Let’s face it without these owners we wouldn’t have a sport.
By the way the way National Hunt racing works in general is that the horses are recommended by the trainers directly to owners so maybe attention should be pointed to Jonjo O Neill / Fran Beryy rather than JP….
Sure the first time he saw Binocular in the flesh was at Cheltenham two years ago so obviously he’s not too involved with too may of the acquisition decisions.
December 29, 2010 at 17:23 #334200He should concentrate on the p2p scene instead of throwing money at every wide margin bumper winner. Look at the success O’Leary has had with a much smaller string.
December 30, 2010 at 00:05 #334238Imperial
MOL has some serious horse’s at the moment
Quito De la Roque
Mr Cracker
Toner D(spelling?)
First Lieuntentant.3 of the Above could be serious Gold Cup Horses in the future. And Mouse has a few other in their as those Mullins. Pure class coming through. Delighted for him!!!!!!
December 30, 2010 at 00:32 #334242He’s plenty more left to reappear:
Si C’etait Vrai
Last Instalment
Crash
Rathlin
Shrapnel (half-brother to Weapons Amnesty)I’m no fan of the man personally but you have to tip your hat to him and the success he’s made of Gigginstown. I think his brother is the driving force behind the operation though.
The vast majority of his string have cut their teeth in the p2p field and it has been proven time and time again to be the best schooling ground – Best Mate, War Of Attrition, Denman, Imperial Commander, Pandorama, Weapons Amnesty, Cooldine, Joncol, Peddlers Cross. I’m amazed that JP/Berry aren’t focussing more on the pointing scene given their mixed success with mainly bumper and flat recruits.
December 30, 2010 at 00:49 #334243Jesus Christ how could i forget Last Instalment and Crash.
2 unbelievable Bumper performers and both only aged 5 i believe
Never heard of Shrapnel but cheers for the heads up. Incredibly exciting times for the owner. And all Irish Bred tooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 30, 2010 at 00:52 #334244With the exception of Si C’etait Vrai!
I think Rathlin might be a British bred. Pretty certain he’s a Kayf Tara.
December 30, 2010 at 00:53 #334245Also
Samain
Sir Des ChampsRecently added to Willie from Gigginstown
These 2 are French and German
December 30, 2010 at 00:59 #334246Also

Il Fenomeno

Why would the media or anyone want to have a go at JP? It’s his hobby and he’s put millions into a game he loves. The JP racing organisation for the want of a better description is massive. Horse come from all over the place and are placed with how many trainers? I think you’ll find someone from that paricular yard found the horse and ran it past Frank Berry.
I have no idea how many Jonjo and AP have recommended but it’s avery small amount compared to what arrives at Jackdaw each season.
He does really well JP when you consider why he does it and that others spend 100’s of thousands and never have a winner……I think the odds of you or I buying a horse and it actually winning is thousands/1
December 30, 2010 at 01:54 #334248Disagree strongly Fist.
If he supported the P2P fields and the Sales so to speak in France more he would have a lot more success. Look at the Ricci’s they buy French Bred all the time for sums up to 100k and they are just cant buy a donkey.
For a man that has such money he purchases at times are woeful. Personally i think the guys running the show on the ground are giving JP a godawful return for his investment
December 30, 2010 at 22:20 #334351If JP has two or three Cheltenham winners he is a happy man. If he can back them before Cheltenham he is happier still. He likes his bets to pay for his party for friends at Cheltenham. As for M.O’Leary, his brother is full time into his horses. That is very important if you are serious about winning. JP is only serious about winning at Cheltenham as far as I can see.I don’t believe that JP is too fussy about the bottom feeders he buys.Seems like he is more interested in distributing his money amongst those who struggle to make ends meet in the training side of the game.Incidentally I think he is a certainty to repeat in the Champion Hurdle this(2011) year. That is all he asks for and wants from his trainers.
December 31, 2010 at 17:46 #334453Does anyone know when he began trading currencies and started to base himself in Geneva?
An impressive progression to make from being a gambler/bookie to placing trades of ”bank size” (if the articles about him are accurate)
It’s also interesting how his brother, although successful in his own right, has never had anywhere near the same level of success as a bookmaker that JP did
January 2, 2011 at 04:30 #334569You would have to laugh.
JP McManus, a man who this year alone has won the Grand National, the Champion Hurdle and a Galway Plate.
The biggest National Hunt owner in racing.
A man who absolutely loves National Hunt. Tony McCoy has said that he has never met anybody who loves the sport as much as JP.The man is apparently worth €1.2 billion! Has won fortunes gambling and can enjoy watching horses that he owns running most days of the week.
Has bought and built onto the impressive Martinstown Stud. He has the mighty Istabraq in his front garden! He built everything up from absolutely nothing.
Then you have people here telling him what he should do! Haha.Good night.
January 3, 2011 at 04:22 #334633I’m not knocking the man, Pajo, I’ve been following his horsese with great interest since Jack of Trumps. It’s just that he seems to have a lot of very moderate horses at the moment. I suppose it’s great that he does; every horse can’t be a champion, and it keeps a lot people in employment. But you would thinka man with his resources could do better

The alarming troughs experienced from time to time by Godolphin, Coolmore, McManus, Hemmings, Johnson, Wylie et. al. tend to prove otherwise. Money helps, but it does not buy certain success. It’s a numbers game for these owners, and sometimes the numbers go on a long losing streak.
If McManus was a trainer, you’d certainly be questioning his form at the moment. But he’s not: and as the current holder of the Champion Hurdle and Grand National crowns I don’t suppose he’s too worried that he’s being taken for a ride.
