…at the end of the season and, in a dramatic turn of events, is going to train jumps horses for JP McManus.
September 8, 2015 at 21:02 #1200478Hardly dramatic, been well flagged here in Ireland for months, even his dad was hinting at it all year, Fine jockey who got awful stick out of pure jealousy, Is R Moore better than Joseph? Yes but then he is better than everyone else as well, A very intelligent and articulate young man who will make a fine trainer.
September 8, 2015 at 21:05 #1200479Joseph went on for longer than I thought he would with his weight problems.
With Mum and Dad giving guidance, no surprise a big name jumps owner is supporting him. Has the breeding/potential to make a top trainer himself.Value Is EverythingSeptember 8, 2015 at 21:38 #1200486Quotes of 8/1 for a Cheltenham Festival winner by 2017
September 9, 2015 at 08:17 #1200762I was slightly surprised when he didn’t retire at the end of last season.
I wish him well. I’m sure he’s learnt a lot from his dad, maybe he’ll have a winner at this season’s Festival meeting.
September 9, 2015 at 11:19 #1200900Wasn’t wanted anymore by one of the Coolmore “lads” according to Pat Keane, who’d probably know. No surprise either. Wouldn’t knock Joseph’s dedication, knowledge or work ethic, but compared to some of the greats that have ridden for the organisation, the lad wasn’t even on the podium and never likely to be either.
Not many jockeys of Joseph’s ability would have held a job of that magnitude for as long as he did, without having the connections to go with it, imo.
The mother and father seem very sore over it, hopefully not sore enough to leave Rosegreen though. Aiden is a relatively young man yet. Plenty more Ballydoyle Group Ones left in him.
Can see Joseph being a successful trainer. Good luck to him.
March 7, 2016 at 22:15 #1236604Looks like the end of Joseph O’Brien’s riding career as he’s announced he is going to stop riding to concentrate on his burgeoning training career.
It seems he already has 70ish horses in training, not bad for a 23 year old, no doubt owners hoping Dad will be on hand with advice if required.
I liked him as a jockey and he notched up several landmarks including record number of winners in an Irish flat season in 2013. I also remember seeing him helping his Dad tack up various Derby runners on the lawn in the paddock at Epsom when he was quite young (I have some pics somewhere of that) and wondering if I might see him train his own Derby winner one day. Never thought he’d ride one though.March 10, 2016 at 17:14 #1236861By all accounts has been helping dad more and more with the training and it is maybe seen as a natural progression of him being boss of ballydoyle in a few years time similar to the pipes and Hanlon. Has done remarkably well so far in his career and time will tell if he is adept at training the horses.
March 11, 2016 at 10:16 #1236913It is not exactly a great loss that he has stopped riding IMO .
I don’t think I can ever recall him winning on one and thinking “what a great ride” .
