    Hi All,

Really looking forward to the superb racing at Aintree.

My BIG fancy for this meeting is Kalahari king in the 2m 4f John Smith’s Melling Chase on Friday.

He loved 2m 4f over hurdles and he has good course form. Should get his ground, too.

I can see him being improved by this step up in trip and he is the class animal with deadly toe.

Not sure what price he is with the bookies (3/1 on Betfair)

He should hopefully be around 7/2 on the day as it is a decent field, though how many will line up is anyone’s guess.

    Whatdyathink?

Should get his ground??? Confused by that, Kalahari King wants to hear his hooves rattle. It’s going to be good to soft at best, more likely soft.

Deep Purple I feel is the fresher horse and he’ll be able to run a much more comfortable race than in the Ryanair. Flatter track, smaller field, tired opponents.

You’d be amazed at how quick the ground can dry out at Aintree Zark, not much rain up here since last week and forecast for lots of sun over the next few days, would expect the going to be good to soft, good in places perhaps. Kalahari King can win on good to soft no problem and I’d make him the bet of the day, won really well this time last year.

He does look like a step up in trip will suit him and I do like the horse but he looked a tad ‘flat’ at Cheltenham? Maybe they were just going a bit quick for him in the QMCC but I do have a small niggle in my head that is saying he may just fall below true Grade 1 level (outside of novice races). Time will tell…..

Kalahari King does not want it rattling good ground, same as last year will be fine. I think at Cheltenham the handicap win at Doncaster had just taken the edge off him, and it was a quick QM (the only race at the festival run below Standard time)

He is in better order this time, I still rate FPDP the one to beat.

Thanks for the opinions. I think good to soft would be fine, though I agree he likes good ground. Most of the fancied runners in the race seem to prefer it good.

The "tad flat" comment is a fair one – I’d like to think it was just a very good race last time in which he did his best and could never quite land a blow.

Will 2m 4f have to improve him or can he win if he repeats his QM effort?

I am leaning toward Forpady cos the trends imply that a good Champion Chase run is a plus!! BUT and its a big but the trip is unknown to Forpady regarding winning!!
So then you look at Ryanair form which is also rleevant and that brings most of the others into the picture. Sorry if I am rambling but I am typing out loud and having seen Schindlers Hunt run so well in this last year I think it is a huge price and if it jumps round cleanly then it has to have a chance!!
Kalahari is a horse that I am not keen on given its habit of staying on from a way back which is not an advantage round here!
Albertas Run won nicely at Cheltenham and I backed it so am not talking out of turn here when I say on this track it wants further!!
Deep Purple is not good enough in this grade!!
Poquelin has found his level and in this class will always find one or two too good.
Tartak and Mahogany Blaze arent good enough.
Oh Crick has no form over this trip
Monets Garden loves it round here and is a big price
And finally Jack The Giant has it to do on the ratings
but could turn out to be useful gven time.
In conclusion Monets Garden and Schindlers Hunt are the value!! IMO

Well on form no because Forpady holds him on QM form. That may not have been Kalahari King at his best though. Both horses should appreciate the step up in trip in what is a wide open race.

Yep – good point, Horsesmouth. I should have thought about that a bit more before posting!

I think Kalahari ran his race in the QM but will benefit from the extra yardage whereas I don’t think Forpady will stay.

I do think Poquelin is the big danger.

I’ve changed my mind from Deep Purple to Poquelin. Just can’t get away from the fact that Deep Purple has only ever won in single-figure fields, bar his 2nd win in a field of 10.

All year long Evan Williams has stated that this is THE race Deep Purple has been aiming towards. He ran incredibly well at Cheltenham considering how long he had been off and how adamant connections were that ‘Cheltenham doesn’t suit him’.

If he turns up fit and well on Friday he wins in my book.

Can somebody please explain to me how Poquelin is a shorter price than ALberta’s Run

He’s trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Ruby Walsh.

Would love to see Monet’s Garden jump them all into the ground, he sure can do it with him laughing at Alberta’s Run last time out, hope Johnson takes to him like Geraghty can.

Think he is the one to beat.

I think tomorrow is time for Forpady to have another day in the sun. He has the beating of Kalahari King and the other horses have been beating eachother all season so it’s hard to have a great deal of confidence in any one of them. The step up in trip should suit and he’s the most consistent performer in the field.

I wouldn’t read too much into his string of seconds as he seems thoroughly genuine to me judged on how he fought off Kalahri King in the Arkle. Kalahari King has at times looked like a superstar but has twice proved unable to overhaul Forpady. 4/1 is a solid e/w bet.

Forpady and Kalahari fight this one out for me, although I have doubts about Kalahari getting this trip. I know he has won a weak novice chase and a novice hurdle over this trip, but neither was a grade 1 and they will go a proper lick round here.
