    Hi All

Does anyone know what happened to Ian Baldings ex stable jockey John Matthias ?
I recall him being slightly hard done by on occaisions, as he appeared to do a lot of the spade work on many good horses, only to be jocked off on the big occaision , generally in favour of Pat Eddery, and sometimes Steve Cauthen

He was certainly part of the team at Kingsclere as recently as 10 years ago, and quite possibly still is.

Matthias was apprenticed to Ian Balding and eventually graduated to stable jockey.

Rode good horses like Leap Lively, Glint of Gold and Mrs Penny until being sacked in Summer 82.

I thought he went on to ride in Hong Kong and became an official there but stand to be corrected

Didn"t he sing "Brown girl in the ring" too?

As Rory says, the last article on him found online refers to his post as work rider for Ian Balding in 2001:

He’s still young enough not to be retired from the Balding yard. It would be nice to find out…
