Very sad news regarding trainer John Hills, who has passed away after having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the spring. Only 53 years old with a wife and four girls.
Very sad indeed and my thoughts are with the Hills family.

June 1, 2014 at 19:02 #480893Very sad news.
Requiescat in pace John
June 1, 2014 at 19:21 #480895Shocked to read about this today it brought back memories of Alec Stewart trainer of Mtoto who also died of cancer age 49 in 2004.
So many good people taken with this horrible disease I hope they find a cure for it very soon.
Condolences to the Hills family at this sad time
RIP John HillsThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 3, 2014 at 12:38 #481014I was working at Nottingham on Sunday, and John Hills’ passing was certainly very keenly felt by many people there.
That included the course’s Master of Ceremonies Mike Vince, who was a schoolmate of Hills and gave an emotional tribute to Hills on the arrival in the winner’s enclosure of opening race winner Mubtaghaa. Although trained by William Haggas, that colt carried the same Hamdan Al Maktoum colours of around half of Hills’ string at present.
In addition, all riders present raced in black armbands, as I believe they might well have done elsewhere on the day or since.

Adoptive father of two. The patron saint of lower-grade fare. A gently critical friend of point-to-pointing. Kindness is a political act.

Grim news and a reminder to us 52 year olds about our own mortality.
I’ll always remember John Hills for Broadway Flyer, who gave me some big pay days, and Gilderdale, who had a remarkable career spanning 73 races, winning 14 of them and I think he won every year he was in training bar one.
Particular condolences to Barry Hills, it’s not right that you should have to bury one of your children.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 3, 2014 at 15:47 #481033Sad loss indeed,a member of possibly Racings greatest family the Hills. Like Steve says
Gilderdale
really put him on the map,he was a proper Hunt cup horse that fellow, ran his best races in defeat mind but like his Trainer seemed to be around forever.
June 3, 2014 at 16:58 #481037Very sad loss and feel their pain. My family had a close family member diagnosed with cancer going in for a routine check up for long standing back problems. They were told they had months to live then weeks then anytime and had passed within 3 weeks. The speed of such a thing is devastating. Wish all their family well and that they come through it. RIP John Hills.
June 3, 2014 at 23:52 #481074Pancreatic cancer really is quite rapid. Probably one of the least treatable also. More research needs to be done into it but its quite underfunded compared to other forms. Sorry to hear about this man.

June 4, 2014 at 06:53 #481080Very sad, must be devastating for him to pass away so quickly, as is the nature of that particular cancer.
At the store where I work, our switchboard operator died of the same cancer, only about a month after ddiagnosis. She was the life and soul of any party, and always started our working day by singing "Always look on the bright side of life…" over the tannoy. Terribly sad.Condolences to his family.
June 4, 2014 at 08:09 #481082Yes it’s a particularly devastating type of cancer; an acquaintance of mine died no more than a couple of months after diagnosis
It was also the cancer that claimed Robert Sangster though he bore it for quite sometime. Saw him at the Ebor Meeting: a shrunken, drawn, shell of a man. Not long left I thought and indeed died the following Spring
Condolences to the Hills family
