Not the first time he ran into some trouble
By Peter Scargill
5:00PM, SEP 27 2022Hayley Turner hopes more jockeys will be encouraged to speak out against behaviour they believe is unacceptable in the weighing room, and that this will reduce its overall prevalence, after John Egan was banned for ten days for improper conduct at Chester on Saturday.
Egan was found in breach of rule (J) 20 by racecourse stewards having used “threatening and abusive language” towards Turner after the 7f handicap. The rule has an entry point penalty of four days for riders with a maximum ban of 21 days.
Turner outlined that she had reported Egan to the stewards out of a desire to promote better interaction between jockeys, and that she had been encouraged to do so by other riders, with Frederick Larson, Jason Watson and Paul Mulrennan present during the stewards’ inquiry.
“I don’t want to go into word-for-word details but the whole thing was ridiculous,” Turner said on Tuesday. “John was unnecessarily and persistently rude after the race and it’s not acceptable.
“I’ve been in the weighing room for 20 years and I’ve seen it all, but for me the way things are now it’s not acceptable to do that. People have turned a blind eye a bit too often to things like this in the past and, for me, this just went too far.
“I wasn’t upset myself, that’s really important to say, but you cannot speak the way he did and we cannot have a workplace where it’s allowed to happen. Hopefully it will put anyone off saying those sorts of things and I had a really strong reaction from other riders on the day encouraging me to report what happened. Nobody thought it was right and it was a really good reaction from the other jockeys and from the officials on the day who took it seriously.”
Turner added that Egan had not used misogynistic or chauvinistic language towards her and that he had apologised before the fixture ended, “which I accepted and appreciated”.
September 27, 2022 at 20:21 #1616129Opinion is divided on Hayley Turner both as a jockey and a person, but for me there are two things in her favour.
The first is that, being from there, she pronounces “Southwell” correctly – none of this “Suthell” media-affectation nonsense.
The second is that, after riding a winner I’d backed at Brighton last summer, when she returned to the winner’s enclosure, when I remarked as she and her mount walked past: “Cracking ride, Ms Turner, well done,” she had the good grace to reply: “thank you.”
I think she’s an alright person and a better jockey than some give her credit for.
Sounds like she handled this situation well.
