Half of them probably won’t show up but its still a cracking entry. Could be a real good renewal of the race this year.

Good to see Glencove Marina is still alive and well too. Hopefully he’s back to where he was two years ago.

Imagine what a race this could be. Big Zeb, In Compliance, Joncol, Schindler’s Hunt, HCTTruth, The Listener . . . . :)

Its the plan for Cooldine to start off here too according to Willie in this week’s Leinster Leader

Joncol to win this for me if he turns up….Cracking race if even half the field show up

The field will probably cut up a bit when the 5-day entries come out tomorrow. Forpadydeplasterer and Big Zeb are likely to go to Sandown and I’d say Barker might end up either there or go for the Hilly Way at Cork the following weekend. The Listener is out for the year as well sadly and Tranquil Sea will probably go back to Cheltenham for the Boylesports race.

Even so Joncol v. In Compliance v. Aran Concerto v. Herecomesthetruth v. Cooldine would be a fascinating contest.

Willie is edging towards the King George with Cooldine so I’d imagine that he’ll probably need the run on Sunday. I hope he runs well though because I think he’ll become something of a forgotten horse with all the Kauto Star/Denman talk.

Very impressed with In Compliance at Thurles and Dessie Hughes and Paddy Flood are supposedly quite bullish about his chances. Always the fear of the bounce factor here though.

Joncol will relish the trip and likely going and the form of the Naas race couldn’t be better.

Herecomesthetruth will probably be close enough to favouritism given that Ruby will probably ride him – given that Townend is likely to be on Cooldine at Kempton and Cheltenham so Willie will want to get him some more experience of riding the horse.

Aran Concerto is undoubtedly talented but there have to be question marks over whether he can stay sound. Won’t have the assistance of Carberry in the saddle but Noel Meade couldn’t be in better form at the moment.

The market will tell a great deal about this race I’d say.

I’m very much hoping that Joncol does the business on Sunday. This race is made for him, but it does look very competitive.

Not as competitive as we thought!

    1. Aran Concerto
    2. Barker
    3. In Compliance
    4. J’Y Vole
    5. Joncol
    6. Watson Lake

Quality over quantity, Barker – still looks very competitive to me. 8)

Presumably this means that your namesake doesn’t run at Sandown? I hope Willie isn’t trying to turn Barker into a stayer – he could clean-up over the minimum trip in Ireland, imo.

I would expect Aran Concerto to confirm the Powers Gold Cup form with Barker. I would have prefered to see Barker wait for the Hilly Way next weekend but I’d say he is a likely runner given that Cooldine and Glencove Marina have been taken out. Presumably they’ll both have the King George/Lexus as their first races.

Wonder will Casey keep the ride on Barker with Ruby on the mare?

    Think its a great renewal…

Joncol alone would have me there.

    Happy

(2:05) 334D John Durkan Memorial Punchestown
    S’chase (Grade 1) €58,500.00 ( 2m 4f – 5yo+ )

    1 Aran Concerto(148) (NMeade) – BJGeraghty …. 11,10
    2 Barker(159) (WPMullins) – RWalsh …. 11,10
    3 In Compliance(152) (DTHughes) – PWFlood …. 11,10
    4 Joncol(153) (PNolan) – APCawley …. 11,10
    5 J’y Vole (FR)(151) (WPMullins) – PTownend …. 11,05

Ruby takes over from David Casey on Barker but looking at the current market it suggests he may need the run. I can’t see why he is shorter than Aran Concerto anyway. AC beat him in the Powers Gold Cup and Meade’s would usually be more forward for their seasonal reappearance than Mullins’ horses.

Squeeky Cawley retains the ride on Joncol who should relish the conditions on Sunday. I watched back the replay of his win at Naas last season the other day and he really is a huge stamp of a horse. He reminds me a bit of Beef Or Salmon for some reason!

If In Compliance doesn’t bounce then he’ll have a great chance. I’m really struggling to pinpoint one horse in this race as a potential bet. I hope Aran Concerto wins because I’ve had a cheeky few quid on him for Cheltenham but you couldn’t rule any of them out here. Even the mare has an outside chance on some of her form.

Looks very trappy- 7/2 Barker would be on the big side if you knew he was fit- his last run at Punchestown was better form than the Powers IMO. If there is a bet at the prices it could be J’y Vole who goes well fresh.

I think the advantage is with In Compliance and Joncol in this, both having had a recent run. Its a difficult little race to figure out, but I think In Compliance is overpriced at 4/1. A saver on Joncol might be in order. I see him as Ireland’s leading hope for Gold Cup glory.

Aran Concerto’s the one to be on,imo.
Would have a perfect record had he not been baulked at Naas and had his ground in the Ballymore.
Should find a few lengths on Barker, given the greater emphasis on stamina, and I’d doubt Joncol has the speed at this level and distance, even on this ground.
In Compliance wouldn’t be good enough, (he’s well overrated for beating War of Attrition on ground and a distance that wasn’t in the latter’s favour), and J’Y Vole might get the closest, without posing too great a threat – in theory, anyway.

Well you know I’m going to disagree with that

If it was down to good looks alone Joncol would win doing handstands.

He travels really well and is an outstanding jumper and he ran a great race to get so close to Tranquil Sea without looking like he could have caught him.

Any of these would have won the race he won back in March and if Posoto hadn’t tired badly he would have been beaten at Naas.

In between times he was tried over a longer distance. He got the trip well enough but given every chance by AP he found nothing in the finish.

Aran Concerto is a similar type but when he beat Barker over this trip, Barker made 2 bad mistakes and wasn’t suited by the uneven pace of the race and at one point David Casey has to almost pull him up or he would have ran over the top of those in front of him. He got a little bit caught out as they suddenly quickened and that combined with what the errors took out of him cost him the race.

His first race this season ended up no more than an exercise gallop, Tatenen set a nice even gallop before folding like a pack of cards and FPDP probably wasn’t anywhere near fit. But he jumped superbly and if he can do that today I think absolutely murder Joncol for speed. I think he is crying out for this trip as it plays more to his strengths than than a quick 2 mile race does.

In Compliance bounced back with a decent win over a longer trip than this and if it came down to a stamina test he’d go close. Much depends on how the race is run with him but I’ll stick with Barker as not only do I think he’ll win I think he’ll win easily.

    At 7/2 Barker? outstanding value!

I’ve backed AC for the Gold Cup @ 50/1 and Barker for the CC @ 20/1. So today I guess I would like to see AC win with Barker weakening into second after the last after travelling sweetly and jumping slickly throughout. Not playing in the race today though
