9 11111- Sir Des Champs 229 6 11-10 W P MullinsForget the Tingle Creek, Punchestown is where it’s at

In all seriousness though, a very good race in prospect. I’d say it will cut up a fair bit: Magnanimity and Bog Warrior unlikely, Quito should go to Aintree if connections have any sense, and I don’t think Mullins will run three.
I think it’s a massive ask for ‘my’ Sir Des Champs to come here first time out and beat a race-fit Flemenstar on heavy ground. A lot will depend on how fit Sir Des Champs is, but I doubt he’ll be wired first time out. I think the bookies have the prices about right, with Flemenstar Evens and Sir Des Champs 7/4.

December 7, 2012 at 23:21 #421961Tommy me old china what this malarkey about your SIR DES CHAMPS as you say. i been going on about SDC since the old king was alive i have

And i think my SDC can win on sunday he won’t be 100 percent but still good enough to win
And i know Tommy will take my comments in good taste he will
December 7, 2012 at 23:43 #421965Darren I’ve been going on about horse since he was still in the womb

Not the end of the world if he gets beaten though Darren, we might get 8/1 for the Gold Cup on Sunday evening
The thing is, in my view anyway, if Flemenstar can’t beat Sir Des Champs on Sunday then I can’t see him doing so at Cheltenham. Heneeds
to win on Sunday to cement his position as a leading contender, which I consider him to be. I’ve already backed Flemenstar at 14/1 but Sir Des Champs is my numero uno

Very good field: the Bog Warrior who won the Drinmore this time a year ago would be a threat to all while there hasn’t been many better operators on heavy ground over 2m4f than Rubi Light over the past couple of years.
December 7, 2012 at 23:44 #421966i’ve backed flemenstar here. I don’t think sir des champs will be fully wound-up first time out, and rubi light is exposed to a certain extent, while the second-season chasers are making hay really.
December 8, 2012 at 19:41 #422109expect flemenstar to win but bog warrior just to big at 12/1 its a bit of an insult really so small stake on bog warrior more of a race to enjoy than speculate me thinks

I agree Marsh, a bit of 8/1 available on the machine. Shame no each way betting, but can’t be helped. Flemenstar has the best chance, suited by conditions and fit. But is too short (imo). Sir Des Champs has the best potential in the field, but fitness and more importantly ground may be an issue. Remember thinking at Cheltenham has a beautiful floating action that’s usually unsuited by very soft ground. He’s won and put up some good performances on it, but two very best impressive runs have been at Cheltenham on good ground. Is it a coincidence? Probably, but there’s still a possibility which has to be allowed for in price (imo). Bog Warrior isn’t out of it, has potential to improve but needs to do so significantly.
Value Is EverythingDecember 9, 2012 at 12:20 #422170bog warrior non runner
December 9, 2012 at 14:15 #422178flemenbeast vs sprinter god, over 2 and half miles, what a race that would be
December 9, 2012 at 14:40 #422180Very good performance; SDC not disgraced, will definietly improve on good ground and going further. Rubi Light, one of last years leading chasers, well beaten. Has there ever been a better group of second season chasers?.
Will Flemenstar stay 3 miles?
BTW he is still some way behind Sprinter Sacre, but if the great ones keeps taking penalty kicks at 2 miles, we’ll never know for sure.December 9, 2012 at 14:48 #422182I didn’t bet on the race but I was a most interested spectator. My hunch beforehand was that Flemnstar had the fitness edge over Sir Des Champs and thus it proved.
Flemenstar looked like a greyhound compared to Sir Des Champs. Of the two, I expect the runner-up to come on the most and reverse the placings next time they meet.
As for a Flemenstar showdown with Sprinter Sacre over two and half miles.
Nah, it just wouldn’t be fair on Peter Casey’s horse – or any horse for that matter.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
December 9, 2012 at 15:42 #422187Rubi Light looked the value beforehand. Disappointed Barry didn’t make the running. I know both he and Flemenstar are natural front runners, but an outsider should try and do something that might make the odds-on favourite feel uncomfortable/not like. Rubi travelled well enough for a long way (better than Sir Des) but didn’t pick up after a mistake before the turn. Probably a long way below form, not that he’d have been good enough even at his best.
Any Sir Des Champs fans shouldn’t feel too bad, convinced he’s better away from testing ground.
Flemenstar is a very good horse, on form deservedly favourite for the Ryanair. A match for the Champion Chase with Sprinter Sacre would be awsome! Flemenstar has plenty of speed and I have doubts whether he’ll stay the Gold Cup trip. Likes to get on with things and 3 miles may be his limit. Seemed to prove himself on a sound surface at Fairyhouse, but Cheltenham could be a problem. Not been to Britain before; said to be a poor traveller earlier in his career. Wherever he goes will be worth seeing and not to be under-estimated whatever the opposition.Value Is EverythingDecember 11, 2012 at 04:48 #422362Loads of promise for Sir Des Champs. He’s definitely a Gold Cup contender in my book.
Flemenstar is an impressive machine in the right conditions, but is he soft ground-dependent?
Like you guys, I’d love to see him take on Sprinter Sacre, but surely he’ll go for the Ryanair instead (?).
