Two more for the list yesterday, Vikki Cartmel & Lee Nemnes. There have also been a number of near misses in recent weeks.
What is it about some jockeys that prevents them from riding through the winning line or even to it?
It seems to happen the vast majority of the time with the lesser jockeys whom you would think would be hungry for every winner, can’t remember AP ever doing it despite his thousands of rides.
Can’t be good for the integrity of the sport for this to keep happening and maybe the penalties should be far more severe when it does occur.October 25, 2009 at 10:25 #255260Nothing wrong with the ride that Vikki Cartmel gave to the horse – only thing I’d have complaints with is her race riding fitness but given it’s an amateur riders race the only – she doesn’t get many rides as the trainer said so it’s hard to keep the fitness up. Aside from backing messrs Brotherton, Fahey, Ellison et al you’re taking ability on trust.

October 25, 2009 at 12:18 #255280Which bit do you take issue with?
Surely you’re not suggesting that you expect an amateur to be as good as McCoy, Walsh, Moore, Sanders, Fallon?
October 25, 2009 at 12:27 #255283Well she did get a 28 day ban for it and although she is a lovely looking lass I don’t think even her staunchest friends would put Vicky Fahey up as a quality pilot.
It’s a shame Emma Spencer didn’t keep doing it, she was easily better than all the current bunch.October 25, 2009 at 12:32 #255285Fahey gets put up on the best horses – you know what you’re getting with her, if you’re going to bet in these races you need to at least research them properly and know a) who the better pilots are and b) who the trainers are, connections etc.
October 25, 2009 at 12:35 #255288It happened with Dottys Daughter at Thirsk a few years back, in cases like that the face should be declared a dead heat.

Spot on. Little surprise to even the halfway assiduous enthusiast which two riders fought out the finish in the finale at Towcester yesterday – one the season’s current leading amateur, and the other one of two young men involved in the champion novice point-to-point riders’ title during 2008-9.

October 26, 2009 at 14:58 #255500Exactly Jeremy – as a start the following jockeys are worth following as they’re better than most:
Oliver Greenall
Jake Greenall (from the little I’ve seen of him)
Rachel Green
Gina Andrews
Claire(?) Allen
Serena Brotherton
Ryan Mahon
T R David
Isabell Tompsett (very good at Newton Abbott and for boyfriend Brian Llwellyn)
Sam Waley-Cohen (will also get some top class horses to ride in open races this year)October 26, 2009 at 15:18 #255504Got that right, Martin – Miss C Allen is indeed a Claire, and was ladies’ point-to-point champion in 2006-7, I think it was.
Gina Andrews will one day attain that accolade, of that I have little doubt, so long as falls such as those she took in successive days at Fakenham and Stratford this week (her first under Rules, I think) don’t dent her confidence to any extent.
TR David is Tom David, and is still only 18 or 19 the last I checked. He enjoys the patronage of the likes of Tim Vaughan and, by virtue of bollocking me on

once for questioning Tanmeya’s effectiveness over the 3m pointing trip two years ago, patently knows how to handle a buffoon when he sees one.
He is no relation to the French singer FR David of "Words" fame, though that would be a fun fib to smuggle onto Wikipedia one day hence.

October 26, 2009 at 15:21 #255506Tanmeya – love that mare, was gutted to see that they were trying to get rid of her (but kind of delighted that she went through unsold)

I’d take it a step further and say you should be prepared to accept whatever happens. Even if she was the worst pilot in the world Richard Fahey has the right to put her up and like all amateurs when you put one up expect an amateur ride from them.
The Stewards would be run of their feet if they pulled up half of them who give their horses no chance of winning through lack of ability to read pace and half of them are so knackered at the end of a race they can’t ride them out to the line, like AP can.
Everything looks easy from the comfort of your home but those who have ridden know how much it takes out of you.
If you haven’t ridden for a month or 2 even taking a horse out on the roads for a a couple of hours will have your legs turning to Jelly. Much the same if you haven’t race ridden for a couple of months.
Best thing is don’t bet seriously in them and treat them as fun like most of the riders do.
Dropping hands as far as the pro goes most will drop their hands when they feel the race is won. No sense in flogging one when you don’t have to and a bit saved today can pay dividends tomorrow. However the word is professional and should they balls up and lose a race they shouldn’t have…..severe penalties should be imposed.
