That Kauto Star – he’s too old, isn’t he?
November 6, 2010 at 20:19 #326590V satisfactory from KS, but SE performed much better than I expected. Jumped slowly on first circuit, was taken wide all the way round, shold do bettr on good ground; maybe I wrote him off to soon
November 7, 2010 at 09:57 #326768If they have any nous they will aim Sizing Europe at the Ryanair this season, a race he could definitely win, but he will need to jump better than he did early doors yesterday.

Imo, Sizing Europe jumped like a crab yesterday, and has a lot to learn to be a threat, at any distance, at the very top level. Off a gentlemanly pace, he was absolutely ponderous at the first 2, losing 4 or 5l at each, and even when the pace warmed up, lost ground in the air at at least half of his fences.
Not the kind of performance you’d want from a potential King George winner, even against a Kauto Star whose ability looks to be well on the wane.November 7, 2010 at 12:31 #326810Lynch reported that Sizing Europe slipped going to the first fence. May explain his sticky jumping early on.
November 7, 2010 at 16:43 #326879Hardly conclusive but worth a look.
November 8, 2010 at 00:17 #326933It was a good performance from Kauto – 4/7 wasn’t bad!!!!
I agree it didn’t set the world alight, but we know how he loves Kempton on Boxing day, and what will he have to beat?
Maybe the engine of old isn’t quite there as before, but his class and ability even now could win many a big race. Essentially he is an excellent jumper.
I feel that, like the sublime Moscow Flyer, when the wheels come off they will really come off and he will deteriorate quickly and profoundly.
Hopefully, he will list a few more big ‘uns to his name before retirement at the right time.

Hope you’re right Zip, and he does win a 5th KG, but I’d be mindful of the last time he ran below par in the Gold Cup. Then – even though winning this race was one of them – he put in 3 more below par performances, before returning to his best in the 08 KG.

History says Kauto Star needed the run – he beat trees at Down Royal in 2008, lost to Monet’s Garden at Aintree in 2009 and was made to fight by Imperial Commander at Haydock last year – and the fact that he managed to beat race-fit rivals in spite of that speaks volumes.
Coral’s 7/4 for the King George is still far, far too big.

Wouldn’t be too sure about that, AJ?
His RPR for his 08 seasonal debut was a stone below those of 07 and 09, and his Saturday win even lower.
After 2 consecutive below par performances, I wouldn’t be taking any short price about what many will see as a formality.November 8, 2010 at 10:49 #326951I hope there are a lot of people out there who think like you Reet might mean the rest of us get a helluva price come Boxing Day.
