Just read on RTV’s site that Jimmy Lindley has died.
I was too young to have seen him riding but I remember him as the paddock expert back in the days when the BBC showed racing.
Sorry to hear he has gone.
March 23, 2022 at 12:44 #1589453Sad news. He had a distinctive voice, when I hear it takes me right back to watching racing when young.
March 23, 2022 at 13:10 #1589462Grew up listening to him. May he rest in peace.
March 23, 2022 at 14:05 #1589472Another voice from so many of our youths gone.
Seemed a lovely guy, with a wonderful gentle tone in that halcyon broadcast era.
Was always typically modest on TV about his riding career, but he won a King George on Aggressor which, as with CAS, was before my time.
RIP.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 23, 2022 at 14:20 #1589476Very sad news. His name conjures up the tranquil scene of horses walking around the paddock in the sunshine from a time long past. RIP Jimmy
March 23, 2022 at 14:23 #1589478Beautifully put, Marlingford – for me his name and voice evoke memories of a sunny day at somewhere like Glorious Goodwood many years ago.

‘looked a picture in the paddock’

RIP
March 23, 2022 at 21:32 #1589524Another one gone from those marvellous days of peter osullivan. The king George commentaries and paddock scenes just great listening and his soothing and very knowledgeable voice made every Saturday a must for watching the racing.
March 23, 2022 at 21:46 #1589525I remember my Gran speaking about him when I was a nipper
and visiting her in Aberdeen. I didn’t realise he rode
over 800 winners, but I mostly remember him for his gentle
manner and distinctive soft tones. A gentleman by all accounts,
and was very easy on the ear lugs. Sorry to hear he has gone.March 23, 2022 at 22:30 #1589527A staple for me growing up watching BBC racing coverage along with Julian Wilson & The Voice doing the racing commentary.
His laid back style and knowledge from a riding perspective complimented their coverage extremely well and when you listened to him you always came away knowing a little bit more about racing in general but especially from that all important jockey’s point of view.
RIP
March 24, 2022 at 04:58 #1589535The past is always remembered through rose-tinted spectacles. Yep, Peter O’Sullevan, Clive Graham, Jimmy Lindley and Julian Wilson (spit!) remembered as being wonderful compared with ITV’s small army of bluffers. Never seemed to rain on those afternoons at Ascot, Good wood and Newbury did it?
March 24, 2022 at 10:11 #1589542I can’t speak for others Colin, but that’s not the case for me at all. I don’t think the TV coverage back in the day was better than it is now.
But I do have fond recollections of Jimmy Lindley’s calm and measured presenting style, and my post was paying tribute to the fond memories I have of him.
March 24, 2022 at 10:13 #1589543From an era when everything seemed alright in the world.
Never forget that voice and always immaculately turned out.March 24, 2022 at 10:32 #1589546Ah sad news, I can’t remember his riding, but he was the paddock and pre stalls voice. His most remembered quote was “……..has a lovely set of hands”.
