Usually when I back Crowley he has a mare or has no luck or gets chinned on the line. Otherwise I think he’s a very good jockey. I try to leave him alone for his sake as much as mine but if I fancy one of his then it just has to be backed.August 1, 2015 at 09:46 #1152662I’m not a huge fan of his and I didn’t see this particular ride, but the form book showed that The Corsican ran over 12-13f last season and struggled a bit. He has been cracking over 10f this year with his last race running on strongly in the Prince Of Wales over 10f.
Sometimes though, no matter how many times a horse runs on strongly looking like they will get the extra furlongs, they just don’t get it well enough.August 1, 2015 at 10:47 #1152730He had a shocker today on The Corsican, should have won.
Had a golden opportunity presented to him to get the rail alongside the leader and for some reason declined it. Why look a gift horse like that in the mouth? Then went from cantering to riding like a madman in the finish when he realised he’d cocked up. Deservedly he didn’t get up to win after losing the horse his impetus.
Meanwhile Frankie, who some on here wrote off last season rode a cracker on the winner.
Form is temporary. Class is permanent. That’s the difference between a top jockey and an average one.
Swap the jockeys here and you would have had a different result.Totally agree Yeats.

Plenty of room up the inside for a long way up the straight, The Corsican was relaxed, all Crowley needed to do is go alongside Hillstar without going for everything at that point – and the race was his. I was shouting at the TV for him to make the move. Always going to end badly after that.Value Is EverythingAugust 1, 2015 at 11:29 #1152805I’ve always liked Jim Crowley, but, have to conclude on this occasion, it was a shocker. Got it terribly wrong.
August 1, 2015 at 11:34 #1152808I thought he should have won on The Corsican yesterday.I have backed him each way on Charles Molson in the first today,if he is not in the first five I will only have myself to blame.

If you go to back a certainty always buy a return ticket.
August 1, 2015 at 12:06 #1152892suffice to say that I am of the opinion ( always have been )
that Jockeys do make a difference .100% agree. I think the problem with jockeys managing to deflect a lot of blame when it is justified could date back to the tie when Lester (typically modestly) suggested the horse deserves nearly all the credit and the jockey is a minuscule part – just along for the ride.
Of course Lester may have been clever here, realising that any blame he may attract in the future would be minimised with that comment.
It does however intensely annoy me that as soon as an obvious error of judgement is made form the saddle, the racing media immediately looks for reasons to blame the horse “he wasn’t good enough even when the gap did appear”, “he wasn’t the most willing parter” etc.
Bruce Millington wrote a brilliant article about why we should be allowed to be critical of the sacred cows in our sport (he was specifically referring to John Gosden’s decision to withdraw Golden Horn from the King Goerge) however the same ought to apply to poor rides. The forums are fully of criticism in this respect (sometimes over the top, sometimes pocket take, but not always). However the racing media seem loath to criticise for fear, I presume, of the jockeys not giving interviews going forward.
Professional footballers have to face criticism and go in front of the cameras all the time. Why not so in our sport?
August 1, 2015 at 12:32 #1152934Do think often it is because of the horse’s character, would not use the word “fault”. eg. Horses that are free need to be settled in behind, so no good complaining it came from too far back in a slowly run race (unless of course it’s the type to settle better in front). So media is right not to blame the jockey in those cases and sometimes punters can identify horses likely to be “unlucky” and “lucky” by looking at the pace angle.
However, I agree media does not criticise jockeys enough – The Corsican and Mustadeem/Levy to name two!
Did the media criticise Hughes for Fattsota?
Value Is EverythingAugust 1, 2015 at 16:56 #1153412Spot on Invajica I could not agree more, no one in themedia or RUK or C4 ever blame a jockey or say how poor someone rode. I have no idea why.
The only one who does level critiscism is Matt Chapman and I think that is why so many people loathe him but he says it as he sees it which in general all racing fans do. Yes on occasions he is wrong but don’t we all.
I just wish peopel would be more honest and say what everyone is thinking, it was a Sh&&e ride or so onAugust 1, 2015 at 19:49 #1153740However the racing media seem loath to criticise for fear, I presume, of the jockeys not giving interviews going forward.
The people you hear on Channel 4 and the Racing Channels are little more than cheerleaders for the sport. All we hear and will continue to hear about is the great rides. There are no boat rockers within the gravy train ranks.
As a punter it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest if I never heard another jockey interview. They are invariably a waste of space.
August 1, 2015 at 21:03 #1153844Slightly off topic regarding the distinctly below average ride on said beast this afternoon, but there is nothing remotely average about Crowley’s performance against the market for the last 19 years.
A staggering performance really…
