A happy ending for Screen Hero, who held on from Deep Sky in the colours of Teruya ‘White Muzzle’ Yoshida. Vodka kept on gamely for third.
We may see the winner compete in europe next season and Deep Sky could also be on his travels.
I think Purple Moon was our best finisher, sixth or seventh according to commentators. He stayed on well, but just got outpaced in the straight.
Papal Bull ran with credit on his final run, but was apparently pulled up fairly quickly after the line. Hope all is well.
Sixties Icon was a huge disappointment and never in it.
Matsurida Gogh was just touched off in fourth and my fancy, Oken Bruce Lee, ran well in fifth after getting outpaced turning in.
Great race, great spectacle.
November 30, 2008 at 12:35 #193322Vodka box-seated and had every chance – and proved to me she was too brilliant for this race nowadays … until she kicked back late for third/fourth. Difficult to assess her performance.
The pace was not genuine and without Matsurida Gogh in his usual role it further lacked a nice, solid gallop. I was happy to back Meisho Samson because it sounded like he was firing since Paris.
Screen Hero did not have poor formlines at all: most recent 5 starts (oldest to most recent) were 31221. But they were below the required for a Japan Cup.
I think this was a disappointing Japan Cup. The leading contenders ran to form and were beaten by a longshot.

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=88hBIrfb_XoIt was Demuro’s turn that said ‘I love Japan.’ He is loved by other Japanese jockeys and the reason was clearly shown in the after-race interview. A nice young man.

I basically think that our middle distance horses have been visibly weakened since Sunday Silence’s direct sons were almost gone. Also I think Vodka is a miler.
November 30, 2008 at 20:05 #193361Where did Meisho Samson come in the end?
There’s something about the atmosphere at the Cup that makes me want to go one year. Everything from the fanfare to the race itself – just everything oozes quality. It is one of the best 1m4f races in the world, in my opinion.
Whilst watching the replay of this years Japan Cup it looked almost a carbon copy of Deep Sky’s loss to Vodka just a month or so ago. Deep Sky has been incredibly unlucky in his last two outings….I wonder if he’ll be preped for the Arc next year? He’s definitely better than Meisho Samson in my eyes.
Purple Moon put up a decent performance. He was well in there at the end, I just feel that Jamie had him too far back in the pack in the middle stages to launch a big enough challenge in the final stretch. If Jamie put Purple Moon in exactly the same place as he did at Longchamp I feel that he may have just got closer. Confidence for the Hong Kong Vase in 2 weeks now.
Sixties Icon dissapointing, Papal Bull expected performance really.
As for Vodka, I agree – Vodka does look like a miler and a high quality one at that. I wonder if connections would dare prep her for an end of season target at the Breeders Cup Mile? It’s a long way to go but if she did go I’d be confident she would make a massive impact.
December 2, 2008 at 08:00 #193694Vodka should try a second tilt at the Dubai Duty Free first.
