Good news indeed, but this is not a shock. Always seemed a hasty decision and remember some who knew him thought there was a good chance of a return at some point, if not this early. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jamie was suffering from depression or something similar (severe lack of confidence / fed up) when the originl announcement came last year. Whatever the reason am glad he’s back and wish him luck. May be a Breeders Cup Classic in the offing?

Doubt it Gingertipster, there would have been an extremely lucrative management job on offer. Much easier to change your mind after accepting that than the other way round.
December 14, 2014 at 16:52 #498479Even so Yeats, doubt if he’d have taken it without other factors being involved. You’re right though, if he didn’t know for certain then best to take the job and reconsider afterwards than not take the job and regret.
Value Is EverythingDecember 14, 2014 at 17:09 #498481Although I understand that he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, on his day he is as good as anyone, in my opinion.
He tends to be one of those jockeys who looks really good when it all falls into place, but really poor when it doesn’t go to plan.
In my opinion 34 is far to young to be giving up, unless injuries play a factor.
He could still do well supported by the likes of Kevin Ryan, Michael Bell, Jamie Osborne, Charlie Hills etc.
Good luck to him anyway.December 14, 2014 at 18:00 #498488So glad he’s changed his mind. Jamie is an elegant enigma. One of the best riders I’ve seen. You never really quite left but welcome back, JP Spencer
December 14, 2014 at 19:40 #498496A rider who polarises opinion but far too young to retire. With Doyle, Buick and Atzeni tied to retainers there should be some decent spare rides
December 14, 2014 at 20:20 #498504Lovely Christmas present for the bookmakers.
December 14, 2014 at 22:02 #498518A sensible decision I would have thought. Although I am not a big fan he’s well capable of maintaining a good number of winners per season and he’s a bit young to have developed enough interests to fill the void that leaving the job would have created.
I would agree that the shock decision to retire, followed by such a quick reversal might indicate a mental problem of some sort. Maybe he went through a bad patch and now feels well enough to get on with the game again.
Although he’s not on my Christmas card list, I wish him happiness and contentment in his work.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 14, 2014 at 22:15 #498519I have always liked him as a rider, and as Gingertipster suggests there are probably other behind the scenes issues at play here which for one reason or another we will never be privy to.
Like Richard Hughes before him, he has often come in for stick because of his hold up style, however a trainer once said of him (James Fanshawe if memory serves) that because he is so good with horses that need to be ridden that way he tends to get booked to ride such horses far more than he does front runners and as such he is unfairly judged on his strike rate with horses that by definition need luck in running. Certain punters overlook this when they launch into tirades about "Frank" getting beaten again on a short one.
I am personally happy is continuing in the saddle. He is one of an ever diminishing list of jockeys I would feel confidence in riding a short one I was having a chunky bet on.
December 15, 2014 at 11:18 #498546Glad to hear the news. Again not his greatest fan but gets the punters, critics talking with his riding style. I’m sure that will continue. The clue for Jamie will be to ignore the Twitter comments etc or talk of retirement may be here again.
