A lengthy ban coming up, I would have thought. Eased up on an odds on chance and done on the line. £9,805 matched at 1.01.
I know Windsor is awkward with the bend just after the finishing line and horses can hang to the left – but he was a neck in front just strides from the line and clearly stops riding.
August 19, 2024 at 18:46 #1704950Looked very bad with his horses also drifting to its left. The owners won’t be too happy about that.
August 19, 2024 at 18:47 #1704951Not the best day for Roger Varian. Lost a race he should have won and has had all the Obaid horses taken away.
August 19, 2024 at 19:04 #1704955No ban. What an absolute joke racing has become.
Before the inevitable question: I did not have a bet in the race.
August 19, 2024 at 19:15 #1704957It was clear cut the horse didn’t win because the jockey didn’t ride out. Like has happened here, most stewards aren’t fit for purpose and another example why there should be professional, centralised stewarding.
August 19, 2024 at 19:23 #1704959It also wasn’t good when Matt Chapman and the other presenters kept on referring to the jockey as “The Doyler”.
Most observers think he has failed to ride out and cost punters money. It doesn’t help when racing then comes across as some chummy little clique, where presenters are not objectively critical.
August 19, 2024 at 19:35 #1704961That is a shocker!!
I watched it live and fully expected a long ban. How could he tell the horse was spooked by the winning line twenty yards out.
If I ever get into trouble I want “the Doyler” as my lawyer.
August 19, 2024 at 19:37 #1704962The “explanation” and the visual evidence.
August 19, 2024 at 19:43 #1704963The Stewards Report:
“James Doyle, the rider of No Retreat, placed second, appeared to stop riding shortly before the winning post. After being interviewed and shown recordings of the incident, Doyle’s explanation that No Retreat jinked in the final strides on the run to the line, causing both itself and Doyle to become unbalanced, requiring him to get a hold of the horse’s head, was noted.”
Stewards:
Sophie Candy (Chief Steward)
Georgina Cartwright (Chair)
Cody Watkins (Steward)
Kelly O’Boyle (Assistant Steward)
Josie Brown Smith (Raceday Assistant)August 19, 2024 at 20:35 #1704966“Appeared to stop riding” no he stopped riding. I can’t see the horse jinked he just stopped riding it out to the line.
The more I know the less I understand.
August 19, 2024 at 20:35 #1704967Translation: if I criticise a ride, no one will speak to me.
August 19, 2024 at 20:56 #1704968He stopped riding and as a result the horse veered to it’s left. Had Doyle ridden him out properly the horse would have kept a straight line and also won the race.
Probably Doyle is just too big a name nowadays to be kept on the sidelines for 21 days or so.
August 19, 2024 at 21:13 #1704969Looking at the stewards report again, they don’t appear to have merely “noted” Doyle’s self serving explanation. They appear to have uncritically accepted it.
There is nothing the stewards could have done to help the punters. But they have failed in their duty to uphold the rules.
I don’t know if it is possible for the BHA to overturn the stewards decision but if it can it should. Their decision is perverse.
“Probably Doyle is just too big a name nowadays to be kept on the sidelines for 21 days or so.”
That is certainly how it looks, no matter how much the BHA may say otherwise. Would a 7lb claimer have got away with that ride? Would the stewards have believed such a cock and bull story?
August 19, 2024 at 21:30 #1704970Yet there are some who still act like it’s a complete mystery as to why people aren’t betting on racing any more.
August 19, 2024 at 21:53 #1704972For one of our top flight jockeys he should hold his hands up because from side and head ons he stopped riding for no obvious visual reason.
The more I know the less I understand.
August 19, 2024 at 22:29 #1704974“There are some who still act like it’s a complete mystery as to why people aren’t betting on racing any more.”
100%. Why bother with it when the participants and the stewards treat punters with such total contempt? There are plenty of other sports to bet on.
August 19, 2024 at 22:49 #1704975A storm in a Windsor teacup IMHO
