“also feel that they all should be more open to highlighting the average and bad rides so that they start to re-dress the balance of the over effusiveness of the good rides – they always tend to find some lame excuses as to why jockey ‘x’ has been unlucky in the race rather than it being an average or bad ride.”
In football you can say Ronaldo or Messi had a lousy game there and no one for even a second imagines you are questioning their overall ability.
But criticise a jockey for a ride and you are a loathsome armchair jockey pocket talker who should be thrown to the dogs, never mind the fact betting funds the Levy and a lot of prize money.
They want to perform in public, be handsomely paid for it, but never be criticised.
No one wants to see social media trolling, hate and threats etc, but ordinary every day flak goes with the territory.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 30, 2021 at 15:01 #1575516Very good comparison with football, Ian. Players will hold their hands up and say they had a ‘mare but it doesn’t happen very often in racing. Gavin Sheehan apologised for giving Nina The Terrier too much to do at Haydock the other day but I can’t think of any other recent examples.
December 30, 2021 at 17:02 #1575537First may I congratulate Francesca Cumani on her upcoming event due around Royal Ascot.
I think most who have posted on this thread know my views on the programme and it’s many and varied team of presenters. My wish for 2022 would be a clear out of the dross replacing them with people who can convey the sport in it’s many facets to both the newcomer and knowledgeable in it’s audience.
good luck to allDecember 31, 2021 at 21:29 #1575811To entice new viewers this lot would have trouble enticing a fly to S****
January 1, 2022 at 11:38 #1575928ITV covering the racing league next year.
Six Thursday evenings in August and September.
I wonder what SSR will be saying about this.
January 1, 2022 at 11:46 #1575931A load of well-funded Class 3 Handicaps is a welcome addition to the Racing Calendar.
The “Team” and “League” ethos behind it, however, is not only pure cringe but an outright insult to genuine team sport and the tribal fan culture that surrounds it.
Support of a club in football, a game where passions run high and support of a club is often handed down from generation to generation, is light years ahead of some contrived bunch of racing teams and the truly risible deluded notion that racegoers and punters will form attachments to them.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 1, 2022 at 11:54 #1575936Pretty much the same view as Ian.
Class 3 Handicaps are the area I work in so that suits me down to the ground, the League concept is daft.
I presume there has been some agreement on mutual benefit with SSR on this one otherwise there’s no way ITV would be showing it.
January 1, 2022 at 12:14 #1575943I know ITV take a lot of flak on here but they have added the Sunday series, racing league, Leopardstown over Xmas and several other days to their coverage over the year.
The extra exposure for the sport has to be a good thing.
As for the racing league, the format does nothing for me. But I can still enjoy the racing itself without worrying about the teams/regions/whatever they are now.
January 1, 2022 at 12:25 #1575947I see robnorth get a mention on the Opening Show today
Correctly answering the turf trivia about Malcolm Batters riding Martinstown to win the 4 mile chase at Cheltenham 40 years ago, despite carrying 24 pounds overweight.
I noticed Richard Hoiles said late jockey changes weren’t allowed then. Surely he could have cried off as unwell or in his case being inebriated from the night before but as he drove the horsebox there maybe he wasn’t too bad.January 1, 2022 at 12:41 #1575955Nice bit of paddock punditry by Jonathan Neesom on RTV. He said he did not like the look of I Am Maximus in the paddock and would not want to take a short price about him.
January 1, 2022 at 12:43 #1575956Great news
the racing league or whatever it is called will all be shown live on itv
something else to detract new comers to the sport…
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
January 1, 2022 at 12:44 #1575957Neesom is one of the best pundits/analysts out there. Love it when he is paired with Stewart Machin- in my opinion, that’s Racing TV’s A-Team… I pity the fool who thinks otherwise.
January 1, 2022 at 12:45 #1575958I tweeted matt Chapman regards the Sunday forum not being on now on ssr and he hinted that there was a change in direction on racing on TV. Seems like itv racing is only going one way so we are going to have to suck it up. I’m now watching most races on the sporting life site. Can’t stomach mostof itv team. Don’t mind holes, rishi, matt but nearly all the rest are a real turn off. Maybe I’m just an old fart.😁
January 1, 2022 at 13:05 #1575964Thanks for clarifying the term ” Rancid ” I’m sure that had nothing to do with said barrister threating ITV ….
January 1, 2022 at 14:48 #1575994I know I sneer at the “smile lighting up wherever” thing but David Maxwell really did. I hope they have a minute to interview him back in the paddock.
January 1, 2022 at 15:00 #1575997Spot on Gladiateur.
January 2, 2022 at 10:53 #1576152As I don’t have RUK, I recorded the Irish coverage on the Free Sports channel on Boxing Day.
They had a presence at Down Royal, Limerick with the coverage officially anchored by Gary O’Brien at Leopardstown. The problem was we hardly heard from Gary all afternoon as it was a constant switch from race to race across the three venues with 21 races from noon to 3.45.
Effectively, there was a race every 10 minutes so by the time you saw one race they were at the start for the next one and all you got was 90 seconds of rudimentary analysis.
That encapsulates the problem with TV racing – there are two approaches. One says – “let’s show a few races properly with proper pre and post race analysis and debate”. Now, that’s fine if you like and respect those doing the analysing but as this thread shows most people have taken a healthy dislike to someone on each of the channels.
The second approach is “let’s show as many races as possible” – that obviously means more action but less time for analysis and it becomes a conveyor belt from one race to the next.
There’s a balance somewhere between those two approaches whereby it’s not all about having to listen to the views of analysts you don’t like or having race after race shoved down your throat with no time for review or analysis.
