How many more times those that clown Chamberlain have to remind us how HRM The Queen “Loves” her horses. ? Why doesn’t Chamberlain nip off for an ice cream while the fashionistas babble on
It was a fraught day for the Lord Great Chamberlain – currently the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley – as he had the unenviable task of having to hire a Bugatti Veyron in order to transport Her Majesty at 150mph from the Palace of Westminster, where she had some boring meeting or other, to Ascot in time for the 2.30. That well known Royalist, Dennis Skinner, was good enough to remind those gathered for the unavoidable chinwag that this was the case, bless him
So, one could forgive His Lordship the fawning as I expect he’d had an earful from Queenie and felt the need to relieve his stress with something stronger then an ice cream
By the way, and would you adam-and-eve the coincidence, there’s a chap who does the racing on ITV who shares nearly the same name: no not Ed Chumley, that would be taking coincidence too far: Ed Chamberlin
June 22, 2017 at 14:08 #1305605Chamberlain again, telling us that the Queen “loves the horses”. Good grief
June 22, 2017 at 15:33 #1305621Nice little interview with the legend that is Mick Channon. Especially liked the Mick’s last few words there.
June 22, 2017 at 17:32 #1305659What a great item with Hayley at David Simcock’s yard on the Opening Show riding out Bless Him and then he scrapes home in The Brittania thanks to a non runner and beats my selection Ronald R..
Great coverage today by the way and Richard Hoiles commentary on the Gold Cup was a classic.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 22, 2017 at 22:04 #1305727It has once again been pitiful, once again seeing more of the horses than the crumpet would be an achievement. I had to miss some of it today but caught the Ascot Gold Cup. There were the fashion gang looking for ill-dressed wimmin with an umbrella for a hat and then you see the cutie leading in Big Orange. Nice simple red dress, an unostentatious hat and a figure to die for….and I’ll wager the fashion slobberers never even noticed her cos they ain’t looking for style.

Probably looking for a twithood.
June 23, 2017 at 09:43 #1305812I’ll probably be watching ITV today as RUK are also covering fifty other meetings.
The fashion stuff has always been the same on the mainstream channels. It’s an intrinsic part of the meeting, like it or not, and lots of casual fans enjoy it. My grandma is always on about the hats and dresses when she watches it, although it makes me yawn.
There is no getting away from it without watching the dedicated channels, I don’t think.
I personally haven’t noticed any more fashion crap on ITV than I did on C4 or BBC, but maybe that’s because I don’t pay enough attention to it!

Ah, I see the error of my ways. “Chamberlin”. That actually took a while to cop on. Jolly good, well played

Here is the thing though, ITV have prominently featured the two fashionistas. Prominently. When C4 had Gok Wan, he was not as prominent with his segments. They at least got him in on the fun with betting tips (tended to bet on 3-4 horses in a race)
At least with the NBC coverage, and it is evident European TV cover it, they have that chef on who at least is worth while with ingredients of the popular foods and drinks and how to make them eg that Mint Julip drink that you see them drink in bucket fulls at the Kentucky races (great PR for the main sponsor Woodford)
I am all for the bright , shiny coverage of the main stream channels (and ITV have done a decent job of it ) Murtagh has been good (bar the singing but fair play, Francesca has been disappointing at times with some errors of facts and Ed, oh dear. Brian Gleeson is grand and Chappers has been good. Harvey has been excellent
But these fashionistas are way too much. Way too much air time.Yer man looks like a garden gnome.

Thank you for easing my anal retention
John Francombe and Claire Balding constipate me too
June 23, 2017 at 13:40 #1305870…not to mention Beechers and the St Ledger :)
June 23, 2017 at 17:51 #1305945Always seems a shame to me that RUK has to show races from away meetings during big meetings, also shouldn’t Oli Bell be banned from Ascot after running onto the course yesterday?

Suicide attempt as he recognised the production’s poor quality.
June 24, 2017 at 07:58 #1306097I only watched a bit of it so maybe it was the small dose, but I quite liked it. I’m even starting to like Chapman, never thought I’d say that. Luke’s stuff at the start is good. They had a gem with the American pony rider.
I suppose a lot of time spent wittering about frocks is to be expected and endured at Royal Ascot. The only thing that grated on me was Ed’s marketing- “We have attracted soooo many brand new racing fans! They’re hooked!” Time will tell, Ed.
June 24, 2017 at 08:55 #1306115I think Ed needs to not overdo the whole I’m such a nice guy, all the people I work with are nice guys, sort of line as I gets a bit tedious after a while

So everything else should stop for Ascot
great we all should sit for 30-35 minutes between Ascot races watching the boring Racing UK presenters drone on because you don’t want to see other meetings. The racecourses are equal partners in Racing UK and ATR and should expect their product to be shown.
June 24, 2017 at 15:22 #1306287On a bit of a tangent I notice that the BBC in Northern Ireland are showing the Ulster Derby live with two other races from Down Royal. Are the Beeb banned from showing this in the rest of the country due to ITV’S deal?
