He’s done exactly as suggested by yours truly in this very organ. B-)

Or as the Mail puts it, ‘piling pressure on Police’. This from the paper that has done nothing but that for the past fortnight. Vile publication, and clearly one that is terrified of him.

Starmer resigning and Angela Rayner becoming leader would be a good move in my opinion.
Never liked the idea of anyone in Labour with a title “Sir”.

    “Vile publication”

I love how the Mail website pretends to be challenging the government all day every day then reverts to obnoxious right wing type just in time for the next days front page headline every single day.

They fear Starmer because he’s a decent honest man, smarter and more electable than Corbyn, and he’d make the Mail’s owners pay more tax to help fund heinous Red flag commie projects like the NHS, education and ensuring everyone actually gets to eat every day.

“Starmer resigning and Angela Rayner becoming leader would be a good move in my opinion.”

Has been reported that Raynor would step down as well if Starmer resigned. Not that I think he will. He’s a former barrister after all, so would be surprised if he didn’t know whether he broke the rules or not.

He will not have to resign. The media just like getting into a frenzy about such things.

Brendan O’Neill has suggested in “The Spectator” that there should be an amnesty for all Covid lockdown offences. Partly because the rules were stupid in the first place and partly because no one ever really understood them. Several changed from day to day and much of it was guidance, not the law.

Lots of the fines issued during the first lockdown were rescinded on appeal when it became clear the police did not understand the rules themselves and exceeded their authority.

While it is annoying to see Johnson break the rules and guidance his own government imposed and Starmer enthusiastically supported (even wanting them to go further), I think on balance O’Neill is right. Draw a line under this now and instead start to deal with the serious economic problems and cost of living crisis these stupid rules did so much to create.

Tbh it’s a typically libertarian “The Spectator” take on things and one motivated, I suspect, by this latest turn of events.

“No, you don’t have to resign, Starmer (because if you do you take our bloke in No 10 down with you).”

    Everyone’s got an agenda.

    Agree Cork

Some of the cases and fines issued have been ludicrous and if throughly challenged in court, would probably fall apart. Some of the restrictions were nothing more than spiteful

Its a complete waste of time

O’Neill and all that Spiked Online crowd claim to be Marxists!

Whenever they do, I am reminded of something Salvador Dali said about Pablo Picasso:

“Picasso is an artist, so am I. Picasso is a Spaniard, so am I. Picasso is a communist, neither am I”.

Wishy-washy liberal Simon Jenkins comes to a similar conclusion in the Graun:

Tom Slater, editor of Spiked, has clearly been discussing Beergate with his former boss Brendan O’Neill:

Let’s call time on Beergate and Partygate

Wouldn’t it be nice to have some objectivity in the media. Every outlet seems to have an agenda.

    Agree, Colin.

Each media channel exists to push the owner’s particular agenda these days; objectivity died decades ago, sadly.

    I agree, too.

As a Labour voter, I deride centre-right mainstream media bias, but tbh The Guardian and The Mirror are just as bad the other way.

I actually think the BBC is the most objective, but it lacks bite in its coverage.

I have to read the Daily Mail – I pick up a gratis copy from their offices whenever I pass by. It is a nostalgic paper for me – Paw used it for the racing. There was one tipster he called the spot.(it was the Mail’s handicap rating) Goodfellow was better than Cap’n Heath according to his estimation.
    He’d sometimes say…

” Well the spot gives it…”

Spot on Colin, it’s all aimed to satisfy their own goals. A week ago several
Mail like newspapers were all for hauling Starmer into a police led Covid
inquiry. However, as soon as Starmer made in clear that if he should be
fined by police he would resign. Now it’s all a case of, oh well, let
bygones be bygones as they suddenly see the implications for Boris.

It is quite remarkable how many right-wing commentators are suddenly calling for a Covid law amnesty now someone on the other side is showing signs of possessing that modicum of principle and integrity that their bloke could only ever dream of.
