My son went out and bought his German Shepherd a paddling pool, only problem it was a blow up one and his dog took great delight in destroying it and rolling around in the big blue puddle it made.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 12, 2022 at 00:14 #1606588Still you’ll have precious memories, Jac.
I remember taking one of our dogs to the local seaside resort (Southport) home of Red Rum. It might have been same year as the heatwave but memory a bit faulty on that, anyway he sat in the boating lake.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.July 12, 2022 at 00:18 #1606590Because it would be too hot to walk the dog later in the day ( I’m not a morning person) we went down to the beach at 8 and were rewarded with the sight of several dolphins swimming very close to the shore. And then breaching. Downside is the dog didn’t get much of a walk because by the time they’d swam out into deeper water it was getting quite hot so we took her home. There’s something about seeing dolphins that just lifts your spirit. Seeing them leaping out of the water is just joyful.
July 12, 2022 at 00:53 #1606593I was with a lady on Saturday who used a fan (not an electric one) I was sitting next to her and the intermittent cooling breezes she was producing were extremely pleasant – so much so they almost turned me into a dream state and unable to move.

I went to Southport every year as a kid. Family from there and aunt lives right next to the ground
It could be nice weather but not the Isle of Wight
“Baking” in Birkdale is 22c
July 12, 2022 at 08:56 #1606601Don’t mind the heat but prefer it cooler when I’m out walking. Actually set off out at 6.30 am yesterday. By 8.30 am it felt very warm and by 10 am hot. Luckily it did cloud over a little so the sun became quite hazy. I felt rather knackered when I got home and thought I must be getting too old for this.
July 12, 2022 at 09:14 #1606603It showed the years last night when the temp had it 35C+. These are now becoming more and more frequent – 1976, 1990, 1995, 2003, 2018, 2019 and 2020 from memory. So although hot in 76 this was more of A prolonged spell of hot, sunny weather. The first five of those years were what they class as decent summers. 2019 and 2020 were what I would call average. By 2050 when I, if I’m still here, will be 79 we could regularly be hitting 40, likely 35-38 where I live in Yorkshire. This could be a massive problem for me and others around the same age in later life.
July 12, 2022 at 09:18 #1606604I live in a safe area and am very much a night owl so can happily go out for a walk at midnight if I want to. It’s so peaceful, rarely anyone about. The nights are still warm enough for a t shirt at the moment which doesn’t always happen even after a hot day.
July 12, 2022 at 09:39 #1606608You’re not the secret axeman are you ?
July 12, 2022 at 09:58 #1606610My guitar is a bit heavy to be carrying around on midnight walks.
Too hot for my flasher mac as well.
July 12, 2022 at 10:03 #1606611Interesting (not to mention depressing) that the flagship Today programme on Radio 4 this morning dedicated far more time to the latest photos of deep space than to the current climate crisis.
Says a lot about why life on this planet is doomed.
July 12, 2022 at 10:06 #1606612Well Dicky, you go against the sound advice of Bradman – the railway ace and Mick Portillo’s bible. He states…
” Europeans should go to bed early and rise early to take advantage of the cooler air for their morning perambulations. ”
P.s. sorry Glad you slipped in there unnoticed and I trumped you !
July 12, 2022 at 13:18 #1606625A few out grounds are being used in the current round of matches. Yorkshire are at Scarborough and Middlesex are at Merchant Merchant Taylor school. I assume the MCC needs Lord’s for a match and Middlesex have been told to take their ball elsewhere.
I would prefer Lancashire to play at Liverpool Cricket Club but it looks like the snobby Lancashire members do not like going to Liverpool, even leafy Aigburth. They prefer a trip to the seaside instead, although the ground is not as good.
July 12, 2022 at 17:47 #1606669There was a time when I could go to a Point-to-Point at Hackwood Park and go to a County match once a season at Mays Bounty.
The town where I live has lost both.
Queens Park, Buxton, Darley Dale and Ilkeston were among the Derbyshire out grounds my Dad took my to back in the day.
I also saw Yorkshire play at Bramall Lane, Abbeydale and The Circle in Hull.
Without outgrounds, county wide support becomes impossible.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 12, 2022 at 18:46 #1606686I thought Darlene Dale was an American soul singer

Harrogate, Bradford Park Avenue and Middlesbrough were other Yorkshire out-grounds
I too went to Bramall Lane, twice for cricket and once for the three-stand football, if memory serves. Abbeydale was nice but my favourite is Scarborough
Ted Hemsley who played for Sheffield United also played for Worcestershire CCC. There used to be a steady if small stream of footballing cricketers; the last I recall is Phil Neale who played for Lincoln City and, again, Worcestershire during the 1980s
Have there been any since?
July 12, 2022 at 18:51 #1606688The sadly recently deceased andy goram would be closest I think
