January 31, 2008 at 18:32 #139288I think, "hats off and a tremendous reception, you have never heard one like it at Liverpool…Red Rum wins the National" by Sir Peter O’Sullevan in 1977 is better!
And if I was, not so old, and was better with computers, I would find a link and post it!

January 31, 2008 at 19:12 #139300The best commentary, technically, has to be Richard Hoiles and the 2006 Stewards Cup.
A large field, the lead changing hands several times in the final half furlong, a five runner blanket finish and he called the result spot on.

His third win and old Peter’s excellent commentry would still bring a tear to a glass eye.
Almost as big a tear jerker to Crisps owner
Pitman….makes me cringe at the best of times but everytime I see him smacking Crisp with his whip in his right hand intead of his left as he approched the elbow I could jump of my seat and…. smack him….possibly the worst peice of ridng in the history of racing.
The say PO’s commentry when Attivo won the Triumph was one of his best ever………..he owed the horse and you wouldn’t have guessed it he was such a pro.

February 5, 2008 at 16:33 #140405Gotta be Desert Orchid’s Gold Cup win, ‘Dessie has done it!, still brings a lump to the throat when i watch/listen to it..
February 5, 2008 at 17:17 #140415Sir Peter O’Sullevan’s 1986 Gold Cup climax ~ absolutely no contest in terms of evocation. It’s all I can do not to start blubbing every single time I listen to it!
[b:1yd6awus]“And it’s Wayward Lad, the veteran, trying to break his Cheltenham hoodoo, being pressed now by Dawn Run in the centre, Forgive N Forget on the near side as they race to the line; and the mare’s beginning to get up! As they come to the line she’s made it ~ Dawn Run has done it!”[/b:1yd6awus]
February 6, 2008 at 16:48 #140685My signature says it all really.
Great performance, great commentary.
"HE’S ABSOLUTELY PULLING DOUBLE"
"EDDERY GIVES THE GO ON ZAFONIC, THIS IS THE TONIC WE’VE WAITED TO SEE"
"BUT THIS IS A VERY GOOD HORSE – THIS IS ZAFONIC"

I think we’ve had this discussion before, but I really couldn’t agree more. This is by far my favourite ever race becuase it was an exceptional bit of commentary on top of an exceptional performance.
It’s a shame that GG can’t even get the name of a horse correct these days

GG’s quickly becoming the Murry Walker of Horse Racing

I still remember this race so vividly. I was only 11 years old and Zafonic was my first ‘favourite horse’. Such a shame his career was curtailed by the broken blood vessel he sustained in the Sussex. An even greater shame he died after such a promising start to his stud career.
On that performance, he would have taken a helluva lot of beating in any Guineas.
