I was just wondering, since he mentioned Good Thyne about 20 times instead of Good Thyne Tara.
He called Simon Munir – Simon Manure
Glens Harmony became Glens Melody…… just to name a few……April 27, 2018 at 15:31 #1352180If that’s the case he’s been senile for years
April 27, 2018 at 15:37 #1352182I heard a rumour that he’s retiring at some point this year.
April 28, 2018 at 08:26 #1352316That rumour seems to do the rounds on a very regular basis.

Doesn’t it just! Here’s an article from eleven years ago, saying he was basically turning it in:
I like the quote “I do very little preparation before each race”. You’d never guess.
For me, it’s time for him to start to make the run towards the bend that sweeps downhill and takes them over the brow into the beginning of the back straight that leads to the crossing that heralds the approach to the first of the open ditches and it’s…erm…erm…

April 28, 2018 at 10:14 #1352339I suspect when RUK takes over the irish the authorities may look at the presentation of the sport and make some changes I am sure also that RUK may be keen to have a fresh start and may have a little word in the HRI’s ear.
Even though technically they have no say over the commentators in Ireland they will have some clout they got Chapman removed from any racecourses they owned when he did his unsuccessful racecourse commentating so I am sure for the money they are paying for the rights they could easily persuade the authorities a new commentator would freshen up the game.
By the way Ian Bartlett is also getting bad the other day he said a horse I was on finished 4th when it was actually 2nd.
April 28, 2018 at 11:05 #1352359For its premier NH festival, the whole production seems set in the dark ages. They look like they have a maximum of three cameras, each set in the worst possible position. A total mess.
April 28, 2018 at 11:06 #1352360I hope you’re right, Steve, Irish races are virtually impossible to watch currently due to the commentary.
Correct re Bartlett too, he has become appalling – almost as bad as Cattermole and Thompson.
April 28, 2018 at 13:08 #1352390I did notice the other day in a grade one at Punchestown he kept calling Next Destination as Next Generation
maybe he’s a Trekkie !

There is also no view from above, like at Cheltenham or even PERTH over the last couple of days.
April 28, 2018 at 15:33 #1352419Didn’t he also salute Pallasator as a win for Dubai Racing?
I can only assume it’s loyalty to the man that’s keeping him in a job.
April 28, 2018 at 17:48 #1352441Oops. She had a red cap on Des….
thought one of his colleagues would’ve given him a dig in the ribs…April 28, 2018 at 18:33 #1352450In fairness to him he does mention all the horses rather than a lot who just spout shite like Cattermole.
Perth had a drone hence the overhead shots.April 28, 2018 at 18:41 #1352452

Brilliant…

April 29, 2018 at 16:24 #1352553Totally agree about the quality of the coverage and steeplechasings remarks. It’s awful
Yes I thought last week his commentary was dreadful and makes one appreciate how smoothly professional holt and hoiles are
April 29, 2018 at 17:59 #1352558Perth had a drone hence the overhead shots.
And Punchestown can’t afford that?
April 29, 2018 at 18:08 #1352559I like dessies voice for commentating as stupid as it may sound.
It’s true though that he is full of errors, which of course isn’t ideal. I don’t know his age but maybe he should retirE? To be fair ATR don’t have Irish racing for long so it’s unlikely he’ll be in a job for much longer.
Flicking between ATR and RTE2 showed the difference in quality and whilst he’s heavily involved in sales within Ireland, I wonder could RUK get Richard Pugh for the job?
