“But I will also be looking out for any Class 4 and 5 Handicap Chases/Hurdles at 2m4f+ at the supporting meetings – that’s where I’m more likely to have a bet.”
I always enjoy Sedgefield on the Tuesday, Hexham on Thursday and in particular Fakenham on Gold Cup day. I have had some nice bets come up at that meeting over the years. As my father always says, a 5/1 winner of a selling hurdle pays you more than 5/4 winner of the Gold Cup.

Great line.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 3, 2022 at 22:28 #1585650Not if you put five times as much on the Gold Cup winner.
Value Is EverythingMarch 3, 2022 at 22:51 #1585653It’s the fecking Gold Cup!
Yes, 5/1 seller winner pays you more than a 5/4 Gold Cup winner.
Your father may not be typical CAS; but In my experience that is often just a reason addicted gamblers give as an excuse to bet on more races on Gold Cup day.
In reality very few study that seller for very long if at all and therefore should not bet.
Indeed, if your interest is a love of racing rather than gambling – you’re more interested in the day that is Gold Cup day.Value Is EverythingMarch 4, 2022 at 06:45 #1585666Relax Ginger. My father hardly bets at all now. I doubt he has had a bet for years outside of the Grand National. He was a small stakes punter who was not interested in backing 5/4 chances.
His point is similar to your mantra “Value is Everything.”
March 4, 2022 at 07:32 #1585667Yes, please relax.
It’s a great line – and very pertinent for any punter.
The media will analyse every race at Cheltenham to the nth degree – value won’t be easy to find.
But a lot of what’s going on elsewhere will go under the radar.
Smaller yards often target horses for races at minor meetings during big Festival weeks.
I certainly won’t be solely focussed on Cheltenham by any means.

Many punters follow wrong media analysis which means great value for some of us.
Value Is EverythingMarch 4, 2022 at 11:43 #1585687Nicky’s in favour of five days:
Gives him even more races he can use as an excuse not to run during the rest of the season.
March 4, 2022 at 12:39 #1585690It is very interesting looking back on previous festivals, as RTV has this week.
In Kauto Star’s second Gold Cup – not that long ago in 2009 – there is not a single Irish trained horse in contention when they start freewheeling for home. How the balance of power has shifted!
Watching “The Road to Cheltenham” now (which this week is looking back at previous years), it is interesting to see how different the Champion Hurdle was when they used to run past the finishing post and around what is now the Best Mate enclosure before joining the track they race on now. As Ruby Walsh said, it made it much more of a stamina test and makes you realise why Sea Pigeon never won the race until the course was changed to something like it is today.
March 4, 2022 at 13:49 #1585694Not for the first time, CAS, we agree, even if our observations are 22 years apart….

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 4, 2022 at 17:47 #1585730It works for Royal Ascot, so why can’t it work for Cheltenham? Oh dear, does that really need answering?
Flat racing is the international code, with the interest and the horses to fill extra races, plus the extra betting revenue from overseas.
None of which NH racing has – in fact it’s bad enough now with 4 days, with horses avoiding each other and field sizes getting smaller. It shouldn’t happen, but likely will; those in charge need to give their heads a massive wobble.
As for the Champion Hurdle, I prefer it as it it now; it should be a speed test for the best, fastest hurdlers; I’d far rather see a classy speed horse winning than a stayer slogging it out.
March 4, 2022 at 18:24 #1585736Royal Ascot was 5 days before going 5 days, even if the last day was the Heath meeting.
7 races a day at Royal Ascot, it is more than likely Cheltenham will be 6 races a day for 5 days. Wonder if there’ll be an equivalent reduction in the price of admission?
Just more dilution of the product but Greed rules OK.March 4, 2022 at 18:35 #1585739Wonder which two new races Henderson thinks the festival is crying out for? Another couple of Novice hurdles maybe. Doubling the amount since the three dayer has worked wonders. Lets have another couple.

March 5, 2022 at 10:53 #1585816An intermediate 2m4f Grade 1 Hurdle…..that’s what is missing …..and a Bumper for horses who haven’t come from point to point…..
(I may not be entirely serious…..)
March 5, 2022 at 12:29 #1585834A maiden hurdle for horses that have raced at least six times. Rated 0-120. From yards that have fewer than two festivals winners, only.
Would be fun.
March 5, 2022 at 13:48 #1585846I like the idea of an amateur riders 1 mile 40 runner race where start in the stalls and have to jump both hurdles and steeplechase jumps
March 5, 2022 at 21:25 #1585899I’ve campaigned for this race to be added to the Festival before, and frankly cannot understand why my idea hasn’t been implemented.
The Saga Ever Decreasing Circles Veterans Amateur Riders Handicap (Registered as the Enda Bolger Memorial)
