Does anyone know if there is an equivalent of the Racing Post published in Ireland?
August 27, 2008 at 18:55 #178377The Irish Field is a weekly racing paper relating to Irish racing. I think it comes out around the Wed-Thu of each week and therefore doesn’t contain final declarations for the weekends racing.
There is no Irish daily equivalent of The Racing Post but racing is not held every day in Ireland, particularly during the winter when Thursday could be the only midweek fixture in the country.
The Racing Post is available every day in Ireland and carries Irish cards and a Spotlight summary of the race (no individual horse comments though except for big races)
http://www.irish-racing.com is a dedicated Irish racing site (owned by Irish Times newspaper) but I prefer the Racing Post online for all racing on these islands.
Why do you ask?
August 27, 2008 at 21:08 #178386The Field is published on Saturdays.
August 27, 2008 at 21:11 #178387The online equvalent of timeform is Turform and when you register they put 20 euros in your account which buys 4 racecards at 5 euros a pop.
August 27, 2008 at 21:20 #178388It’s a similar product, but I certainly wouldn’t call it the equivalent, and Timeform do their own cards and perspective for computer timeform for all Irish races now.
August 27, 2008 at 22:56 #178394agreed, i meant equivalent in product type, not quality. It is however free.
August 28, 2008 at 00:42 #178400The Racing Post is published in Ireland; that’s a rough equivalent I’d have said.
August 28, 2008 at 11:07 #178424Thank you all very much.
I ask because I am going to Curragh for the Irish Leger/National. First time there.
August 28, 2008 at 19:21 #178468The Irish Field does what the RP should do- actually gives the times of the horses as they pass the post, all the way down to the last finisher.
To my mind, that is the way ahead for those who do speed figs, rather than estimate it in lengths, which of course varies depending on whether its good or faster or GTS or slower (decent point made by Dave Edwards in RFU this week or last on the very point).
I mean, you wouldn’t expect to read that Usain Bolt beat Asafa Powell by 2 and a quarter lengths, would you? One would be timed at 9.69, the other at 9.82 or whatever.
Bear in mind that the Irish Field does this without the sort of technology that the late lamented Turf Trax used, I’m surprised that the RP can’t tabulate times.
Also, in NH starts, it can’t be beyond the wit of man to calculate the time of a horse after it passed the start- lots of horses are way back when the tapes go up. I saw a race at Market Rasen a few weeks back where the winner’s time could well have been clipped by 3-4 seconds if you calculate when he actually passed the start point.
August 28, 2008 at 19:38 #178471Would be a lot more useful if the times were right in the first place
