Why on Earth is Ian Davies posting about a Point to bloody Point here?

Well, It’s very rare for me to do so and some may know I take a special interest in Point-to-Point and Hunters’ Chases.

And if I blatantly aftertime that I had a bit of 200 Premier Magic (though tbh not my main bet) my maximum on Famous Clermont at eight point something also on the machine (because I thought he should have been favourite) at Cheltenham and Aintree last year plus 44 Quintin’s Man two days ago you can see I might just know what I’m talking about (though there’s better than me, including my friend who bets value, won an absolute fortune on Premier Magic and persuaded me to back Risk De Pluie at 75 on the machine at Fontwell after it impressed him at Wadebridge).

Anyway, at Larkhill tomorrow, it’s the Coronation Cup and those of you who’ve had a dabble in the Cheltenham Festival Hunters’ Chase market (beware of aging regressive ex rules horses, and don’t be seduced by their former massive ORs, is my perennial advice there) might want to take a look at the entries.

There’s a horse in there who is of particular interest to me – I will leave it at that for now.

The word on the street (or in the field) is that Time Leader won’t turn out again quickly following his Hereford exploits, even though the yard has previous for quick successive runs.

Regatta De Blanc is owned by an enthusiastic young syndicate who plunged on her from 11/2 overnight to 6/5 when winning at Taunton and some of them consider the mare to be Cheltenham Festival Hunters’ Chase material.

She’s progressive, but the one who really interests me is Grace A Vous Enki, who has bolted in at Larkhill twice already this season and may go for the hat-trick here.

Not quoted in ante-post lists and Cheltenham might not even be the plan, but a victory today would make him one for the notebook.

Dead heat for the Coronation Cup between Grace A Vous Enki and Regatta De Blanc and with Viroflay back in third.

With Viroflay (OR 118) just two lengths back in third, I doubt it’s quite Cheltenham Festival Hunters’ Chase form tbh.

But it’s strong form from two progressive Pointers nonetheless and yes, there may be suitable targets at those Hunters’ Chase evening fixtures.

Grace A Vous Enki and Regatta De Blanc (already a winner at Taunton) are names for the Hunters’ Chases notebook.

Cheers Ian, as my knowledge of point to points is severely lacking I’ll follow these when they next run; especially as one contains my daughters name and the other is the follow up album to the first every record I bought on vinyl!

Used to love going Cottenham with its little stand . Saw horse race twice in a card there in late 90s , and a blue blood by Sadlers Wells plod round , Fire and Shade i think it was called , Ex Stoute . My folks are in Dorset now so Badbury Rings and Little Windsor i recall as being good days racing . My understandibg is both Cottenham and Little Windsor closed now .
Mckenzie and Selby Hunters Chasers and Pount to Pointers finished as well i believe but stand to be corrected .
    Some great write ups .
One ive just found on internet
Llanfillin Lady ” a fat tubed lumbering hulk ” .
Theres plenty more but struggling to find them.
Ian or anyone else got some good ones ?
They were quite to the point the comments .

Four by Two . 66 ptp races , 56 failed to complete from 78 to 89 ( ran at 21 years old ) . ” the most ancient horse in training , but still too young to remember the owner riders last winner ” .

I liked Cottenham, pro course back in the day, hence the stand – ditto similarly defunct Tweseldown and Buckfastleigh, still going but left handed nowadays so the derelict stand is down by the second last.

Wasn’t actually a Mackenzie & Selby fan – critiquing amateur riders by professional standards might be funny once, but every annual felt like the same tired old set of “jokes” every year to me.

    Many loved it, though.

I’ve been to loads of Point racecourses, including a fair few sadly closed now.

The craziest had to be Rodmell, literally on the side of a hill, but so cleverly cambered it actually worked.

The old Racing Channel televised a few Points back in the day, including that one.

Yes, Littlewindsor has gone, but I had one memorable trip there….

Arrive at entrance in my car, old boy sat on a chair.

Me: “How much to get in, please?”

Him: “Tenner, where you come from, boy?”

    Me: “Hampshire.”

Him: “Hampshire??!! You driven all the way from Hampshire to come to our little old point-to-point?! For you – fiver!”

That was a great wrlcome and start and it got better.

Maiden race, I spotted a horse that had been third in a 2m4f Chepstow Novices’ Hurdle and by my reckoning it had two stone in hand on that form.

Opened evens in a place, showing a commendable turn of foot for my (middle) age, I got there first and had what he’d take on it before wiping the price off.

It was 1/2 to 2/5 everywhere a minute later.

As they went to post the commentator informed us this horse was owned by the race sponsor.

    And my confidence….just grew.

I think the plan was to hold it up, but the others couldn’t go quick enough to give it a lead, it was in front under heavy restraint by the fourth, was hard on the bit throughout, and somehow managed to only win by eight lengths because if the rider had let out a millimetre of rein it would have won by the length of the run in.

Collected my winnings and wandered off to see what food they had, expecting a burger.

Oh, no, prime steak in a bun for something stupid like a fiver so, having saved that on the gate, I bought one.

    It was simply wonderful.

Cracking day and a lovely drive home back up the A303 afterwards.

Thats a good memory of Little Windsor Ian.
I recall when i went in 2004 on a visit to my Dads the food trucks were good . On that day David Pipe had some hotpots running . However the best race was a two runner members it must have been. Both owned by same owner . Close in betting . My Dad and I decided just flip a coin for s buger and cup tea shout i think it was just for interest. It was one best two runner races ive ever seen , nose in it at end in my favour .Great times . Well next year , the local PTP brochure came out , front cover photo of both those two jumping last , and me anx my old man in direct background !!.
What would be your number one course now .
As a Londoner i always regret not going to High Easter , out the country now so long way to go . Is High Easter any good ??

    That’s a really good question.

My all-time favourite would have to be Dalton Park, because it’s the first one I ever went to (back in the late 1970s).

High Easter is a cracking, undulating galloping track on the East Anglian curcuit.

Now that Northaw near Potter’s Bar and J24 of the M25 is now sadly closed the nearest Point track for Londoners would have to be Godstone about a mile from J6 of the M25 – they have a fixture on Saturday, 4th May.
