Simon Rowlands stopwatch…
“As it is, underwhelming though Auguste Rodin’s victory was, he recorded, by my reckoning, the fastest winning final 3f in the race since detailed electronic timing was introduced, his 34.10s beating the previous best of Capri in 2017 by a margin of 0.40s, or about two and a half lengths.
That stands alongside his fastest final 2f as a winner of the Derby at Epsom in the modern era (and quite possibly ever), reported in an earlier blog on these pages. Whatever else Auguste Rodin is, he is not slow by mile-and-a-half standards.”
July 4, 2023 at 18:34 #1654398Simon reported a 20mph tailwind in the closing stages and, with no official sectional times, Simon had to piece it all together himself and stated the camerawork was unhelpful to him in that endeavour.
Plus I’d say if you truly believe Auguste Rodin flew home, you’d have to think that Adelaide River, under what Simon understandably described as a “considerate ride,” wasn’t exactly slow himself.
All of that said, another really interesting read from Simon IMO.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 5, 2023 at 16:52 #1654437Considerate ride. Is that what a non tryer is called now?
The racing media’s silence on this is disgraceful. Does it think it is OK for a horse running in the Irish Derby to be given a “considerate ride”?
More to the point, do the stewards think it is acceptable? Evidently they do, as long as it is from Ballydoyle.
July 5, 2023 at 17:15 #1654440I hear what you say, CAS, but, tbf, and speaking as a Law graduate ex racing journalist, there’s not a lot more the racing media can say.
If you label a horse’s connections non-triers when the sport’s ruling body evidently don’t have an issue and applied no sanction and connections then sue you for libel and defamation the onus is on you to prove the horse wasn’t trying and that’s nigh on impossible to prove legally.
When the Ramsdens sued The Sporting Life over Top Cees the Life wheeled out experienced independent racereaders to support their allegations, but the court wasn’t interested – it was dismissed as mere opinion.
Unless you can produce legal evidence (like taped phone calls or texts or emails) of clear intent and/or conspiracy to avoid winning there’s only going to be one winner in that courtroom and it won’t be you.

But let’s just say I think the Irish Derby was a highly unsatisfactory race all round.

Ah yes, that renowned speedball Capri. His stud fee is an eye watering €2500 now.
