I’d written my bet off for him in the Champion Hurdle, thinking he was going novice chasing. I’d love to see him going that route, but I’ll assume he’d have to shine in this first. He’ll have his work cut out if the majority of these entries stand their ground, but think a lot of him anyway.
January 14, 2011 at 01:33 #335791As I said in many threads like this, if Hurricane Fly turns up, he wins.

Couldn’t agree more, got him lined up on a double with Master Minded next weekend.
January 17, 2011 at 08:40 #336348A very strange race this. Judging from Betfair it looks like only 3 or 4 serious horses will turn up. Amazingly, at least one bookmaker is offering antepost 1/5 odds first 3 as the field is still potentially 8+. You don’t need a degree in maths to see this is a good deal.Make sure they don’t go NRNB before you get on though.
January 18, 2011 at 14:03 #336545Couldn’t believe the prices, looked last night, Ladbrokes were offering 8/11, gobbled that up with Master Minded 8/15 in the Victor Chandler, looks like buying money to me, but what did I know, I put my faith in Kauto! £100 double.
January 18, 2011 at 14:11 #336547Dunguib will give HF a scare before being Binocular’s main danger in March.
January 18, 2011 at 15:55 #336558As good as Hurricane Fly is i wouldn’t be taking any odds with Dunguib in the Field. We simply have no idea how good he is if he has learnt to settle and Jump even moderatly.
Big Day for DUNGUIB!!!!!

January 18, 2011 at 16:28 #336566Blackstairs needs good ground and needs to strenghten up. Not good enough or quick enough jumper anyways.
Novice Chasing next year would be extremly exciting and very likely since the owners already have a CH horse imo in Zaidpour
January 18, 2011 at 18:52 #336578Dunguib a non-runner.

I know Philip Fenton says he has a slight blood disorder but if he were mines I wouldn’t be running him against Hurricane Fly either at this time of the season. Much better finding a race where he can do his own thing and come home on the bridle then straight to Cheltenham.
I put him up as an ew bet some time ago simply because he scares the life out of me but I’d worry more about the jockey than the horse.
I don’t like critising jockeys but if ever you want to get a horse beat at Cheltenem just copy Brian O’Connell’s ride that day. He settled him well but why so far back in the field with a horse known to travel as well as he can?
The form says settled in midlfiled but in truth he had 4 behind him for a long way and was not only 4 lengths behind AP for most of the way he remained on the outside all the way round. Could easily have dropped him in 5th or 6th and he’d have settled just as well withthe right man on board.
The golden rule at Cheltenham is to be in a position, if you can, to steal the inside berth at the 3rd last and go the shortest possible route even if you’re a few lengths behind.
He’s given both Menorah and Get Me Out of Here between 4 and 10 lengths at the start and if you watch the route AP takes he’s still 4 lengths behind on the turn. You can nearly double that distance because AP has given his horse a copy book ride while O’connel has taken the scenic view.I’m as certain as anyone can be had AP ridden him he’d have won the Supreme. He gained a fair bit on both Get Me Out Of Here and Menorah on the run in and had he taken the correct route and saved ground he’d have won 2 lengths or so IMO.
I can just imagine him trying the same tactics and allowing Binocular first run on the inside this year

They need to get O’connel off him and get the best jockey availabe like Davy Russell or someone …no room for sentiment and this guy simply isn’t good enough. 2 wins over hurdles from 161 mounts says it all? He totally messed up in the Supreme and IMO they must be mad if they are even contemplating allowing him to keep the ride. There’s only one Champion Hurdle.

I agree with Fist. They need to get someone else on board if they’re serious.
It’s possible that Ruby Walsh or Paul Townend won’t have a ride (depending on who’s on Hurricane Fly), Paul Carberry and Barry Geraghty might also be free.
Like it or not Brian O’Connell lost Dunguib the race that day and they need a top class jockey who isn’t phased by the occasion.
January 19, 2011 at 12:04 #336680Personally I think O’Connell’s a decent enough jockey. His 2 wins from 161 does not really tell the whole story imo. Looking at just his last 12 mounts 9 of them have been relative no hopers priced at 20/1 or bigger. He doesn’t seem to be getting the chances.
I do agree that a more experienced jockey may well have won on Dunguib last year however.
January 19, 2011 at 12:55 #336692Stick Ruby, Barry whoever on, still wouldn’t beat the Hurricane.
January 20, 2011 at 13:05 #336822Any possibility of Peddlars Cross returning to his homeland for this???
I’ve heard that the Haydock Park meet is in doubt.
January 20, 2011 at 13:28 #336828I dont think PC is quoted in the betting so i doubt it. Be great if he did comeover mind you. He certainly wouldnt be out of the first 2
