A few decent jumpers have appeared in recent weeks but it is from now on that things will rally get into gear, with Saturday’s card at Gowran holding the entries of Clarcam, Shanahans Turn, Rule The World and Roi Du Mee, as well as a nice handicap hurdle and a beginners chase with one or two interesting entries.
This thread will predominantly be about Irish jumpers, as can probably be guessed from the title.
October 2, 2015 at 09:01 #1210195Tommy nice thread open my questions for you
Any novices you like hurdlers and chasers for Cheltenham
MIN 20/1 Supreme novices
BLACK HERCULES 33/1 RSA
SIZING JOHN 20/1 ArkleMy irish horses so far Jezki on list to before injury
How far you think DEVILS BRIDE can go remember talking to you about him when i mention MADE IN GERMANY as well when both won bumpers but DB has done well over fences.
I thought irish bumpers not strong last year but think they do better over hurdles one horse i think do well is JETT. horse related to Jezki when horse see a hurdle we see best of him.
October 2, 2015 at 09:19 #1210212Totally with you on Jett Darren, put him up last year, and he looked a nice long term prospect, got to come on for that last run though, left me with a bit off egg on my face. Not for the first time haha.
Best of luck this season Tommy, got a few Irish horses I’m hoping for a good season from, including……..
The Job Is Right
Sizing John
Shanpallas
Jett
Ttebbob
Irish Cavalier
Guess Again
Shanahans TurnReally looking forward to adding to the list as the season goes on, I’m sure there’ll be one or 2 others haha.
October 2, 2015 at 19:23 #1210391Thanks for the replies lads.
Darren, here’s my thoughts on your horses:
MIN 20/1 Supreme novices – The strong support hasn’t gone unnoticed but I’ve never seen him so wouldn’t like to comment, obviously he’s highly regarded
BLACK HERCULES 33/1 RSA – He beat Alpha Des Obeaux in commanding fashion in a novice hurdle last season but I’ve always thought of Alpha as the better long term prospect. Not one for me but he’s no forlorn hope at 33/1 considering he was the hottest staying novice hurdler around at one point last season.
SIZING JOHN 20/1 Arkle – This one I like Darren, as I said on the other section. Looks a useful recruit to chasing.
Looking at tomorrow’s card at Gowran, the bookmakers made what looks a serious error putting Frontline in at 11/4 in the finale, a beginners chase. I wouldn’t be mad keen on the prospect of favourite Rich Coast over fences and it’s no surprise to see Frontline backed into 13/8 already.
October 5, 2015 at 18:11 #1214365Frontline was backed from 11/4 down to 6/4 at Gowran but Johnny Burke gave the leader too much rope. A mistake two out then left him with two much to do and he went down a staying on second by a couple of lengths. It didn’t come as a huge surprise to see Rich Coast refuse at the first, but it was then all the more disappointing that Frontline couldn’t take advantage.
An old favourite of mine, The Game Changer, got his head in front at Tipperary on Sunday. He’s proved a decent recruit to the chasing game and a decent 2m handicap chase could suit him in the spring. If he was mine I’d have half an eye on Aintree or Punchestown, he’ll surely be given a break over the winter.
Rule The World has turned into a more disappointing version of First Lieutenant for Mouse Morris. He looks trip-less and very difficult to win with. When he won the Slaney Novice Hurdle at Naas he looked a future Gold Cup horse, but since breaking his pelvis the engine just hasn’t been there, which probably shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.
October 5, 2015 at 20:02 #1214433Another nice card at Tipperary tomorrow. The maiden hurdle with Marakoush, Timingseverything and Ordinary World looks the best race of the day.
Ordinary World appeals as a solid each way option at 4/1 (was 5/1 earlier) but he struggles to get his head in front and the trend may continue tomorrow. Timingseverything has been purchased by JP McManus since an impressive bumper win. I’m always wary when the green and gold is up first time up but if you could be sure he’s trying then he’d be the selection.
The market will tell a tale, expect he will be a big drifter if he’s not ready.
October 6, 2015 at 15:45 #1215050Who are your novice hurdle and novice chasers to follow Tommy in terms of irish horses
October 6, 2015 at 18:48 #1215083There’s a raft of bumper horses I’m looking forward to seeing over hurdles Darren, plenty of which are bumper winners owned by Gigginstown – Tycoon Prince (entered this weekend), General Principle, Disko and Nambour. Loved the run of Disko at Punchestown and the other three have been very impressive as well.
One of the main novice hurdlers I’m looking forward to is Supasundae. He pulled his chance away at Cheltenham and didn’t go a yard at Punchestown, but I think he’s a really good horse. De Bromhead is on the brink of something of a mini golden spell for his stable with his horse, Sizing John and Sizing Granite imo.
In term of novice chasers, four immediately come to mind – one for each of the novice chases at Cheltenham! Sizing John will come up against the mighty Douvan in the 2m division but I like him for the Arkle. Shaneshill doesn’t have the star quality of some of his stablemates but he looks made for the JLT to me and is an underrated horse. He ran a huge race at Cheltenham and backed that up by sauntering to victory over two and a half at Fairyhouse.
In terms of the stayers, Gigginstown hold the aces in No More Heroes and Alpha Des Obeaux. No More Heroes looks one for the three miler at Leopardstown over Christmas before an RSA challenge. He was coming to throw it down to Martello Tower at Cheltenham last season before having his run was stopped in its tracks. Alpha Des Obeaux could be one for the three mile chases at Naas or Navan before Cheltenham, on route to a crack at the four miler. He could be an RSA horse as he’s not short of speed but his strongest asset is his stamina imo. If I could have any two staying novice chasers either side of the sea I’d pick these two.
What novice hurdlers and chasers are you looking forward to Darren?
October 8, 2015 at 10:29 #1216040MIN and SIZING JOHN, BLACK HERCULES are the ones i already said a few others are
TOMBSTONE a horse who bumper race last time out one been over hurdles but got beat. Then Gordon Elliot sent him for a bumper that he beat a Mullins horse think he be a stronger horse now be better over hurdles
JETT.
Was dissapointing in bumpers but now seeing a hurdle think this horse do much better now think 2m5 be best trip
BALKO DES FLOS
Won both bumpers for Mullins looks a 3m chaser in the making but can make a impact over hurdles love to see him go 3m and think he end up being best 3m hurdle horse at the Mullins yard
BEAT THAT
Not forget over hurdles he beat DON POLI and Cole Harden i think he stacks of scope over fences for Henderson and i think he love going over fences a horse i follow as well.
Any thoughts on them tommy
October 26, 2015 at 17:59 #1219231Tomorrow’s Punchestown card is a real sign the jumps season is grinding into gear, with some super talent on shown. It’s a real possibility we’ll see spring festival winners here, particularly in the shape of No More Heroes, Sizing John and Tycoon Prince.
Sizing John is my idea of an Arkle horse and No More Heroes an RSA horse so I’m hoping both take to fences well. Fine Article, like No More Heroes, wasn’t the best jumper of a hurdle and should be another to appreciate a fence. He should be graded class at least but will have his work cut out to beat No More Heroes who is a Grade 1 animal.
Tycoon Prince was one of the best bumper horses of last year and runs in a good maiden hurdle. He could be a Neptune horse but will need to be on the ball tomorrow in a good race.
My idea of the only bet on the card is Ice Cold Soul in the 2m 4f maiden hurdle at 6/4. He was a smart bumper horse last season before a disappointing run in a good race at Fairyhouse. I think he’s better than that and despite Meade’s assertion that his horses are a few weeks behind where he’d like them I think Ice Cold Soul may have enough to regain the winning thread.
October 27, 2015 at 12:59 #1219316Yeah, nice card Tommy, and like yourself, looking forward to seeing Sizing John. Things starting to warm up now
October 27, 2015 at 17:52 #1219353Yeah, nice card Tommy, and like yourself, looking forward to seeing Sizing John. Things starting to warm up now

Was a great days racing alright. My only punt was disappointing but I was delighted with the chasing debuts of Sizing John and in particular No More Heroes, both looked naturals. Tycoon Prince won despite doing a few things wrong. You’d imagine going left handed will suit him better but that was a decent maiden hurdle and that he could win as easily as he did having jumped left was highly impressive. The Neptune would look a realistic long term target on that evidence. He sill has to prove himself a Grade 1 horse but the dream is very much alive. Hopefully he can step up again next time.
PS: I didn’t make it to Limerick for the Munster National Bobby so didn’t get any pictures but will send you a message when I’m racing again. Down Royal is very tempting this Saturday but it’s a fair aul’ trek up the country!
October 28, 2015 at 01:13 #1219389Thanks Tommy, if you decide to go, it looks a card worth the journey
November 18, 2015 at 19:41 #1222192There has been some excellent racing here the past couple of weeks and Cheltenham clues aplenty. One horse who has particularly impressed is Sizing John, who jumped superbly at Punchestown on Sunday and it’s great to see him have two good experiences over fences to begin the season. Tougher tests await and connections are mooting a step up in trip but from a selfish perspective I hope they keep him to two miles for the time being.
The horse I’m hoping he’ll take down this season makes his chasing debut at Navan on Sunday, Douvan. It’s the same race Vautour floated around in last year, and there doesn’t look like there’s going to be much in the way of opposition. Hopefully he’ll make a nice start to the season.
The Mullins novice hurdlers are starting to roll out now, with Bellshill winning at the weekend and both Open Eagle and Up For Review obliging today. I suspect there’s better than those waiting in the wings, with Yorkhill, Nambour Stone Hard and Castello Sforza four in particular who I’m looking forward to seeing.
Outlander made an impressive start to chasing in one of these beginners chase match ups that can be some of the highlights of the season – what better than two or three of last season’s best novice hurdlers taking each other on on their chasing debuts? Bryan Cooper made a winning move between the third and second last but I feel he probably had the measure of Free Expression at any rate.
There’s a midweek treat tomorrow in the shape of a listed chase at Clonmel which sees Sir Des Champs, Lyreen Legend and Mala Beach all making comebacks after varying periods of time on the sidelines. Sir Des Champs and Lyreen Legend have been good to me in the past, particularly Sir Des Champs who gave me a great day when winning the Jewson. However, he’s had a very long spell away from the track and as such I have to pass him over tomorrow. There’s a number of reasons I’m against him: I don’t think the vibes have been particularly good, he has never been in love with soft ground, and he’s not going to be knocked about.
Lyreen Legend will handle the ground but is another who has been off for well over a year. He has looked just short of top class but tomorrow could be a decent opportunity for him. Mala Beach is the one I like. I had him in mind for the Paddy Power at Christmas of a mark of 141 as he has the potential to be rated much higher. He’ll love the ground and Gordon Elliott’s horses seem more forward than many. He looks overpriced at 5/1.
November 18, 2015 at 23:46 #1222238Yeah, been good seeing the recent racing in your neck of the woods Tommy, some good stuff on show.
Chuffed to bits with Sizing John so far, and looking forward to seeing our old mucker Lyreen tomorrow, and hoping for a nice spin from Ttebbob.
November 19, 2015 at 21:56 #1222343Tommy my Irish amigo how goes it? One who looks to have slipped under your radar on your thread at least is CHESTERFIELDAVENUE, trained by Christy Roche. He won a maiden hurdle at Naas that’s also on the CV of messrs Sizing John and Jezki. Looks a possible festival horse down the line, although he seems to have bypassed a lot of peoples’ attention. You got any thoughts on him yourself?

Hi Boz, I remember seeing the race but didn’t think too far beyond that to be honest! The form has worked out well so far with Marakoush winning easily and third placed Coney Island was second at Navan on Sunday. Here’s one for you, the best handicapped chaser in Ireland is entered at Fairyhouse this weekend
