I don’t buy into this "Dubawi Gold was lucky" hoopla. A couple of horses ran below their best, but he was 2nd to a very good horse entirely on merit, and 9/4 is too big for a horse with much the best recent form in the race, (might even go bigger, considering so many write him off)

I don’t think he was lucky, just perhaps flattered by the way the race was run, and by some other horses not running to form. I’d agree 9/4 is getting to a more reasonable price than the original 6/4, but i’d still rather be on Dunboyne Express personally.

All a bit of educated guesswork based on your own eyes on this stage of the season really isn’t it?

    Good luck.

The only way that Dubawi Gold can be considered fortunate at Newmarket was that he got a serious pace to run at, given how hard he has pulled all previous starts.
But just possible that he might not get a decent pace at the Curragh today, and could again run too free, will obviously compromise his chance of winning.
But if he settles, he has every right to be favourite imo.

Personally think young Joseph is an excellent jockey and if Roderick is good enough, he will be.
Is it possible that this may be the last season that young O’Brien will be able to get anywhere near 9-0, (or presumably 8-10 actual weight?) and therefore only chance to ride a classic winner? Hence Coolmore’s decision to put him up on clearly their no.1 horse?

Really great ride from Joseph! He is very tall I think he will not long have a career on the flat, maybe jumps like his cousin?

Dubawi Gold surprised me he finished really well not sure if he would have won had he broken a bit faster or been ridden a bit further out.

In any event the whole thing makes Frankel look good!

I got the impression from Joseph interview that he is going for the French Derby. Didn’t think he would stay 1m4f

French Derby was shortened to 10f a few years ago so I suppose they think he might stay that? No point going the mile route as the competition is too stiff, and the 3 year old middle distance division looks comparatively weak this year with the older horses.

He would have a good chance I think in France.

Hughes rode yet another terrible race, though perhaps DG was simply not good enough on the day?

    What happened to Dunboyne Express?

Just a fantastic ride and well done to the O Brien family!

Hughes falls back to his ‘old ways’ IMO.

Left it too late – got boxed in at about 3F and then had to switch out – poor show from him.

Yes i had money on DG – in a double with Times Up and in a treble with Common Touch – ooh, it hurts!

Hughes rides Canford like this and fair play the horse has the talent to pick up that DG will never have. I just wonder if these tactics will catch him out when CC takes on horses with better form than those he has beaten thus far.

It seems that Richard Hannon is not too pleased about Hughes’s ride on Dubawi Gold. This from the Sporting Life report:

"Hannon was understandably downcast after Dubawi Gold came from off the pace to finish second.
He said: "I don’t want to say too much, but why he (Hughes) sat coming out of the stalls I don’t know.
"He was a long way behind and the horse should have won.
"He’s a good horse and there’ll be other days, but you don’t get to win a Guineas very often."

With Hughes deserting Dick Turpin in France tomorrow so that he can ride Presvis in a high-value race in Hong Kong, it’s not a good weekend for family relationships in the Hannon household.

time figure for Roderic O’Connor suggests he’s an ok winner of the race.

Dubawi Gold was only 2lbs below his Newmarket speed figure, so absolutely no reason to think he was unlucky, as Roderic probably had more than that in hand at the finish.

That’s as good as Dubawi Gold is, and think those slating Richard Hughes have been a little premature.
