The “Steamers” weren’t bets. Put simply it was gangs who used to jump the counters of betting shops and snatch what they could from the tills. Speed was of the essence so they rarely got anything out of the safes. Became a bit of an epidemic in the early 90’s as the companies had taken the bandit screens out of a lot of shops to make them more customer friendly.

I went off Uttoxeter when it was taken over by ( I think) Arena Leisure. It just seemed to encourage drinkers and the price of tickets especially for Midlands National day went through the roof. I haven’t been back there for years, although I might try going to a mid week meeting. We now only tend to go to Kelso because we can take our lock down dog who doesn’t like being left at home. When the price of petrol shot up I stopped going to my local bookies and the social side of that was replaced by listening to W Hill racing radio as I knew a few of the people working on it. Won’t have the book till Thursday as it’s now going to be a birthday present instead of a Christmas one. Looking forward to reading it.
