February 25, 2006 at 00:26 #68126You wait till Our Vic and Sir Rembrandt show Beefy or Fishy the way home, Davey lad!
February 25, 2006 at 00:35 #68127Sorry, i was under the impression it was called the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, not the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup Handicap. ;)
Also, Our Vic? It’s run over 3m 2 1/2f, not 2m 5f. This is one horse IG actually has a chance of beating if they both run!!!
February 25, 2006 at 12:33 #68128Today’s RP front page is puerile in the extreme. Even Zorro ( ) might blush at this one! Hopefully when the Sportman cometh the editor will get a grip of this artist.
RPSPORT does look good granted. The new font, typeface etc would still look more at home in a more contemplative weekly like the Weekender than a bold, brash daily, competing with the electronic media.
February 25, 2006 at 13:20 #68129Even Zorro? What have I done Zilzal  you git?
February 25, 2006 at 15:14 #68130would really like to see R.Hills become second jockey and get Ryan moore in as the first choice.!!!!..he is riding out of his skin in Dubai, and also Hills has had a terrible year out in Dubai for sheikh hamdam.
February 25, 2006 at 17:16 #68131What really interested me in today’s Post was the news that Zorro bets on Class 6 handicaps at Southwell. Is the man’s life given over entirely to pleasure?
February 26, 2006 at 12:37 #68132The Anglo Irish Bank must be reviewing their racing sponsorship this morning. The C4 TV coverage of the prizegiving at Sandown yesterday lasted about three seconds with the commentator, if I heard correctly, referring to the Allied Irish Bank ! Later on a couple of occasions we have the femail talking to the camera with Mac studiously looking away to the betting boards. You expect a more professional attitude than this from a terrestrial channel especially with the Tote these days bankrolling operations !
It’s a quiet Sunday some may be interested in Brough Scott on Timmy Murphy in today’s Telegraph.

February 26, 2006 at 13:54 #68133The article about the unsold Cheltenham tickets is interesting. Funny isn’t it that Gillespie doesn’t mention last year’s move to four days as a possible explanation for this lack of enthusiasm?
February 26, 2006 at 14:41 #68134
Gus,
Market forces at work – Cheltenham may have sold all the tickets for the first three days last year, but the usual proportion of those sales were to touts, who got stuck with them when nobody turned up to buy them.
That’s the explanation for the feeling expressed by many that did go for the comfort of the first three days compared with past years – 55,000 tickets sold, but nothing like that many people actually inside the racecourse.
This year the touts haven’t been buying. Good to see basic economic theory of supply and demand working in practice. In this case Cheltenham supplied six races instead of seven but still increased the price – resulting in reduced demand from the public.

February 26, 2006 at 15:15 #68135You are spot on there.
February 26, 2006 at 22:28 #68136
I just love the Festival but if you have seven races and start at 2pm with 35-40 mins between races, it could be a real problem for me to get back to the station in time – it took about an hour and a quarter last year on GC day.
It was my first visit to GC day so I can’t compare crowd size to previous years but on getting off the shuttle bus I was swamped by touts wanting to sell me tickets for £1 to get into Tatts so maybe there wasn’t the reported 66,000 in then either.
February 27, 2006 at 17:13 #68137anyone seen the racing post.

Paris Turf reports today that the future of the former East Berlin racecourse Hoppegarten has been secured for racing after years of legal wrangling in the wake of the fall of the Iron Curtain.

March 1, 2006 at 20:15 #68140If anyone has mentioned this previously then I apologise. The Guardian reported a couple of weeks ago that Graham Wylie may be sending some two-year-olds to be trained by Sir Mark Prescott this year. Wylie has of course had a lot of success over jumps with ex-Prescott horses. I just thought it was interesting.
