Hello!
Some of you I know already but an intro to those here who I don’t know yet!
My name is Eliza and I am a palaeoclimatology PhD student and University tutor. I also write a blog on my experiences at the races on the BHA Racing for Change website http://www.lovetheraces.comI am fairly new to Racing; but very enthusiastic! I know a lot of you are experts and I am far from that! My first trip to the races (other than a bland corporate day where I was stuck in a box!) was to Ascot for a jumps meeting in the pouring rain about three years ago. I was captivated by a horse (who finished third that day) who had a grey tail called ‘Poker de Sivola’ and have followed him ever since! It has been a very profitable association!
Last year I saw an advert for ‘bloggers’ needed for the lovetheraces website and they stressed that they didn’t necessarily need a racing expert; just people who were enthusiastic and perhaps newcomers to the sport – which I was. The idea was to enthuse people and perhaps write from a newcomers point of view. So as I learn a little more about racing other newbies can follow my blog. I was working as a model at Agent Provocateur HQ just across the road from BHA headquarters so it wasn’t far to go for interview! I had had some journalistic experience writing editorial for Geographical magazine (also maintaining the Royal Geographical Society website and was Press Officer there for several years) so decided to give it a go!
We also have ‘specialists’ such as jockey David Crosse and trainer Amy Weaver; tv’s James McQuillan, fellow enthusiast Karen Thacker and musician Trudi Mosiamo. So there is something for everyone whatever their knowledge of the sport; and lots of offers for free race tickets etc.
The blogs are about our personal experiences; and in my case I have followed a couple of yards (the Llewellyn yard in Fochriw and Neil King’s in Newmarket. I have been thrust into some strange situations – for example at Sandown where I was the tipster for the day!
http://www.lovetheraces.com/voices-of-t … e_tab=blogI won the best Dressed Lady award at this year’s Cheltenham festival and have done a few Fashion photoshoots at Newbury Races recently; so I also enjoy the association of racing with Fashion; I think that is hugely important for attracting new people to the sport.
I hope I bring a different perspective on Racing despite not being an ‘expert’; I have certainly been successful in bringing the sport to a new and varied audience from University academics to members of the Bangladeshi community to fashion models and designers; and so you can see their reaction as ‘newbies’ on my blog. I also interview some of the participants and characters I meet and return to them regularly on occasion. We are limited to what we can do – for example we aren’t allowed to film actual racing; so I hope my photos bring some action in that respect.
I know there is some cynicism on the part of regular racing fans about the Racing for Change initiative; but it is essential that the sport attracts new blood to keep it buoyant in these difficult economic times and for the long term future. At the same time I think it important that the racing experience is not watered down – learning about it is part of the enjoyment!
So looking forward to learning a little more as a member of this community and hopefully to seeing some of you at the races – because it isn’t just newcomers we need to attract but perhaps those who don’t go racing as often as they should since the advent of betfair etc!!

August 15, 2011 at 19:28 #368171Hi Eliza, look forward to reading your posts. I remember David posting as Green Green Desert on here a few years ago. His posts were always worth a read. Hope you’re both well. Kind regards.

August 23, 2011 at 00:24 #368918How is the old fella? That’s GGD, btw, not David
August 23, 2011 at 17:28 #368976He is getting on a bit now and David’s former partner looks after him. She says he is very happy and people think at the new yard he is at say he is a sweetheart so has chilled quite a bit! I have never met him but he had a bad reputation from what I hear as a racehorse but quite the character!

Oh I see- Hope she’s coping ok with everything.I lived in Brynmawr for a while and remember David saying that his partner once worked in the bookies there before she was taken ill.
GDD is,as you say, getting on a bit. Glad to see that he’s still loved.

ThanksAugust 31, 2011 at 09:37 #369566Welcome back, hun! Sure there must be a Dorsetshire Point with both our names on it this coming winter (even though I’ve moved up to Yorkshire since last we spoke)…

Hi there JG!!!
Absolutely we must P2P again! This time we make it to the pub as well!
What part of Yorkshire you luck ducky!August 31, 2011 at 10:28 #369572I’m all up for that, hun! We’ve done Milborne and Badbury, haven’t we, so Littlewindsor seems the next nearest in your neck of the woods to explore. Usually a decent turnout of Richard Barber / Paul Nicholls performers, given Barber’s the landlord at that course.
I’ll drop you a line once the 2011-2 Pointing fixture list has been confirmed, if not before.
Yorkshirewards, I was in Sheffield for nearly a year before the University ran out of money, so I’ve decamped further north. Without giving too much away to all and sundry, let’s just say my nearest Pointing venue now is Heslaker and nearest Rules course is Ponte. Any warmer?

Okkkkkkk where was I? Oh yes, that’d be great I’ll look forward to the events calendar
Now then, hmmmmm are you at the ‘Gateway to the Dales’? Skiptonish area
September 9, 2011 at 01:33 #370526Hi I`m a noobie to horse rating although I have had a bet or 100 in the past. Love the jumps especially some of the local meetings. Gowran is a favourite probably because I have been there twice for the Thyestes and backed the winner both times. I`ll lurk around for a while anyways
