Welcome to the forum .. another girl, my God ..
September 13, 2007 at 15:31 #114765Hiya Reetpetite, welcome to the forum! Hope you continue to post – we’re harmless really!
Good luck to your daughter! Do you still have the ex-racehorse? Any chance any of us might remember him/her?

Yes, we still have her and our bank balance is the poorer for it
! Her racing name was Surrey Downs Girl. She didn’t achieve anything in her short racing career. According to the trainer, she enjoyed the work but not the racing life. We have watched a couple of her races via the "At The Races" archive – not impressive
. Her father (or should I say sire) was Lake Coniston who I believe wasn’t bad in his day.September 13, 2007 at 16:11 #114775Cheers Reetpetite, I don’t remember her myself but no doubt someone on here will!
I know what you mean about the bank balance thing….currently considering buying a horse myself after a break from horseriding but the thought of the finances means I keep chickening out….bound to happen eventually though!
How did your ex-racer adjust to ‘normality’ just out of curiosity? And how did you go about retraining her?

It took a bit of time for her to settle and a my daughter spend considerable time reschooling her which she had to do after school and in the holidays.
I don’t ride myself but from all accounts she is relatively easy to handle but not a novice ride. Racehorses are ridden very differently to other horses and while my daughter has reschooled her, there are still certain do’s and dont’s you have to remember especially when using the reins. The horse has competed in several minor competitions and is especially good at dressage.
She has proved very expensive especially where vets bills are concerned. She has suffered two serious bouts of lymphangitis and according to the vets, she should not be alive now but for her fitness.
Good luck if you do buy a horse. Exracehorses can be retrained to do all manner of things. They just take a lot of love and patience.
September 13, 2007 at 16:42 #114784Thanks Reetpetite, it’s certainly something I’d love to do in the future and I have a lot of respect for anyone who takes the time to retrain a racehorse. Unfortunately I don’t have any illusions about my own capabilities at this stage and know I really need a horse I can learn with rather than retrain – sounds like your daughter is well ahead of me!
One day though…
September 13, 2007 at 19:31 #114816Do you read the ‘Dalesman’ Drone? I get it sent over every month
Only when thumbing through dog-eared copies in doctors/dentists waiting rooms
Just a little too parochial
September 14, 2007 at 03:34 #114864Hi Reetpetite, welcolm to the forum and good luck to your daughter, she’s living the dream!

Kingston, never been to Singapore but sounds like a lovely place, not that far behind London in terms of moneymakers/stock markets and all that stuff, thats just my perception! I take it you have a lovely husband looking after you over there, don’t mean that in a sexist way or anything, there are plenty of independent ladies out there.

Independent lady here…….I’ve been such a gypsy no man has managed to catch up – but I live in hope
September 14, 2007 at 03:35 #114865Welcome aboard Reetpetite – the more the merrier!
Your daughter sounds like she’s loving life doing what she wants, good for her!
September 14, 2007 at 12:28 #114917Independent lady here…..

I learned to ride on an ex-racehorse while I was at University

Welcome to the Forum fellow Cardiffian!

My husband is about to learn to ride on ours
! People in the yard where we keep her have been offering to teach him for ages and with our daughter now working away, he might as well have a go.Thank you for your warm "Kaidiffian" welcome. The instructors at the Northern Racing College were forever taking the mick out of my daughter’s accent so when she said "taaraa", she gave them a copy of "Talk Tidy"
.Many thanks to all of you for making me feel at home

Loving some of Drone’s posts on this getting saucy with some woman?
June 18, 2021 at 18:23 #1546403Ugly Mare and Kingston Town were good sorts, both of whom disappeared without a bye or leave after a period of machine-gun posting
UM had something of the Julie Cecil about her and her banter with another ghost, Maxilon5, was very entertaining particularly when he seemed to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown following an attempt to make a living betting at Southwell
KT seemed more a jolly hockey sticks, my little pony type. It would be nice to know if she ever made it to her dream cottage in Arkengarthdale
November 11, 2021 at 00:25 #1567078Ugly Mare wrote that marvellous thread America the Wonderful. Once she hit the peaks it got % man reminiscing about his time as a backpacker. I tried to intervene but it was like separating Troilus and Cressida under a full moon with all the Twinklers plucking at their heartstrings.
The Big O, just like Jack left the ambulance at the bottom of the hill to climb to the summit to find his Jill. She was eating banana sandwiches on a different peak !
He was forced to cash in with his binoculars – but only a % of the man his love laden backpack thought he was
November 11, 2021 at 06:09 #1567086Resurrecting these old threads is almost as bad an example of being stuck in the past as me watching old William Hartnell era videos of Doctor Who, thankfully now gathering dust for years – and rightly so.
