Hi Ugly Mare! It can just be a wee bit intimidating but it’s OK us racing folk are tough and so long as I don’t mention the Jambos winning last weekend I think I’m safe…………….. oops
Yes it is raining here surprise, surprise! I’m used to it now and me and my 5 umbrellas get along really well, if only I can remember where I’ve left them all.
We raced last night on the sand and it resembled American dirt racing, most of the jocks came back in 2kgs over weight after each race
Mind you it’s still about 90% humidity and the pool is looking invitingI’d love to know who the Jambos are!..lol….
is Kranji the only track in Singapore? is this where you go and if you don’t mind me asking and if you’ve not already mentioned it elsewhere which I’ve missed, what do you do in connection with racing? do you miss dear old Blighty?actually, with a name Kingston Town I’m wondering if you’re Australian? I remember that horse, he was so good.
September 8, 2007 at 11:28 #114010There’s no reason why women shouldn’t pos on here so long as they’ve done all the washing-up and ironing and made their husband’s breakfast/dinner – but not before then!
September 8, 2007 at 11:36 #114012What about those of us that aren’t married?
September 8, 2007 at 11:58 #114014Steve – just because people disagree with you doesn’t mean they don’t think you should be contributing. You need a thick skin to post here, as with most forums.
Girls – there are plenty regular female posters. Some of the old ones have moved on but plenty new ones have taken their place.
Technical Probs – so far as I’m aware all the glitches that we’re going to fix are fixed.
Forum health – not really for me to judge, being somewhat biased, but number of posts, hits, members, all on upward curve and indicate that, while I’m sure there are things that could be improved, we’re doing OK. Some of the old members don’t like the new format, loads do though. Can’t please all the people all the time I guess. The forum has to move forward and, interestingly, some of the people who were vocal about the need to change things are the same people who want things back as they were. Personally I quite liked the old layout/format but it was restrictive and the old software was no longer supported so we had little choice but to change.
NOT that I’m defensive or anything!!!

The hamster’s fed! and I’ve just done ALL the ironing after 2 hours at the gym and now it’s tea timeNOT that I’m defensive or anything!!!
No of course not
How come there’s no footie this weekend Corm?September 8, 2007 at 12:25 #114018I’d love to know who the Jambos are!..lol….

actually, with a name Kingston Town I’m wondering if you’re Australian? Yes Kranji is the only track here – we’re a pretty tiny island. We have a turf track and a sand track which will hopefully be replaced next year with a PolyTrack. I sought of muck around in the media department of the STC.
YES I miss Blighty!!! can’t wait to go home next year.
Was in Australia for years n years before Singapore and have spent more time away from the UK than I have in it – I am herewith a Gypo, Tinker, roadwalker, traveller – I have no where to call home …….Kingston Town was a sensational horse – he could give them all colds just thinking about racing. He was black and shone and I had the honour of riding him in work – well only warm ups the reins were handed over to the real riders when it came to the gallops
September 8, 2007 at 15:02 #114030hey KT, thanks for all that info, and the photo. I think the team in question is ‘Hearts’ so my husband has just told me….lol. I’ve heard about all the shenanigans regarding their players etc. Best not go into that..lol. Funnily enough I have a coffee mug with the clubs name on it!! Not that I know much about it mind, but I do watch a Scottish radio station, now on the t.v. called Real Radio and they often talk about all this [ I got a crush on the host Ewan Cameron – yeah I got problems… ].
Regarding KT, I was in Australia in 1981 and hoped to see him race but missed him. I know he won the Cox plate 3 times and in one year won from sprints to 2 miles, he was that good, one that Aidan O’Brien might describe today as ‘a serious racehorse’, the like of which I’m not sure he’s ever had to be honest.
I’ve always admired that about Australian racing in that they run them over a variety of trips without question. In fact the old definition of a champion, and I’m quoting from one of my books now is :
"a horse who can win sprinting or staying, wet or dry, from in front or behind. This is a better test than stake money because the currency has been so debased".I think that’s true and Kingston Town was one of those rare greats who achieved just that.
I did see Manikato during that time though, he was more of a 7f horse. Don’t know if you remember him at all, but he was another that the public got behind.
Hope you like your job
message to Insomniac:-
.I hope at least you do the gardening, or clean the car?? I’m hoping…September 8, 2007 at 15:22 #114032There’s a brilliant DVD out called The King and The Man – both were huge crowd favourites when they raced. Like Northerly and Sunline and to a lesser extent Lonhro – who was a champion WFA horse but couldn’t win a decent handicap.
I remember Northerly and Freemason cut throating at each for 2400m (BMW Stakes at Randwick) and it went down to the wire. I was standing next to Fred Kerlsey (Northerly’s trainer) at the winning post at the time and didn’t know what to say to him. He was devastated but by heck it was a good race!
Les Carlyon said of Northerly; ‘He fools you every time he races. He has the body language of a loser and a heart as big as the Nullarbor.’
He was a plain looking paddock pony, thin as a rake but all steel and gristle.
He would have rivalled Kingston Town anyday.Oh yes I love my job – not really a job when you actually like going to work and miss it when you’re on holidays and to top it all once a month a load of dosh arrives in the bank!
PS – UM If you’d like a copy of the dvd let me know – it’s brilliant, really well put together.
September 8, 2007 at 16:36 #114037As one of the ‘old’ girls who used to post alot on here – I am still around and reading the forum as much as ever. Just now I have two jobs (part-time at work + full-time mummy duties) I don’t get as much chance to form a coherent sentence anymore…..
I’ve never found this forum intimidating, and even the odd reject drifting in from betfair is more amusing than distressing. Corm’s doing a great job, and I don’t think the newbies should worry about declining quality – not every thread can be full of sparkling wit and profound wisdom.
KT – I totally didn’t twig that you were a girl. You are a girl, right?
September 8, 2007 at 17:41 #114051I’m with Sal on this one. I’m another female member who doesn’t post as much as I used to – or watch as much racing as I’d like. I still look at the forum most days, and it’s as entertaining as it always has been. I think it went through a bit of a quiet spell a couple of years back but new life has been breathed into it.
As for any worried newbies – this forum is easy on newbies compared to one or two other forums I’ve tried to integrate into! When I joined TRF as a fat, Pot Noodle-eating spotty 16 year old, I was soon slated on my very first post, for slagging off Pat Eddery and Kieren Fallon for their lack of personality (I still stand by it).
But as with any knock back, just soldier on, and agreements and disagreements will always pop up. There will always be those moralising, nauseating, sanctamonious forumites, but just give a good dose of it back and you’ll be fine

I’d love to see the DVD. I see it’s selling on Ebay for 31 Adollars plus postage making it 46, I wouldn’t want to spend that amount though. If you can get me a copy sometime, whenever, I’d be delighted and of course would reimburse you. Perhaps when you next come back to Blighty?
I was in Melbourne when Manikato won the CF Orr stakes, I think it was, in a photo. The crowd went berserk.
I remember Northerly and Sunline, that was quite recent, she was a great mare going on till 7 I think. I love the Australian racing scene, my favourite track was Eagle Farm in Brisbane where I’ve been quite a few times, and Rosehill in Sydney, that was nice too. I always used to find that you could back 100-1 shots each way and they often ran into a place..lol..especially 2 year old maidens for some reason…just an impression I was left with.
That quote from my book in my previous post was from Les Carlyon by the way, not that I know him. Freemason I don’t remember, but going back still further there was a famous mare in the 70’s called Leilani who I used to love following.
I’ve only picked the winner of the Melbourne Cup once, when Kiwi won it….I expect you remember.quick message to Meshaheer,
I’ve noticed you’ve not been around too much, but thought it was because you were in the States?? if that was so I hope you enjoyed your stay there.September 8, 2007 at 20:59 #114083As you dont know me you dont know if im a half wit or not so that comment is unecessary shall we call a truce before we make us and this forum look even more stupid and childish
Steve, however heartfelt it may have been and continues to be, your bluster on this and other threads may be wearying to plenty. A few points, therefore, put as delicately as possible.
1) To confirm: Grasshopper’s total number of posts runs to several thousand in real terms – he, along with Thedarkknight and a few others, accidentally had his counter re-set when the Forum got its overhaul a few months ago.
2) As well as being a longstanding fixture of both this forum and Neigh, he is also among the funniest, sharpest blokes alive, and any cheap retorts are likely to be batted back with interest. The sharing and delivering of well-crafted insults is arguably as much a plank of a harmonious relationship as affording someone basic courtesy – as with your girlfriend / partner, so on the boards. Shouts of, by way of an example, “your a tw*tâ€Â
Adoptive father of two. The patron saint of lower-grade fare. A gently critical friend of point-to-pointing. Kindness is a political act.
September 8, 2007 at 22:56 #114095I don’t find anything at all wrong with the Forum but I’m a lady who likes her jumps so my contributions flatten out at a certain time of year.
I find it quite amusing when the ‘debates’ take place and toys get thrown out of the pram, I tell myself it must be the males of the species but I could be wrong!! – not wrong often though!!
I get the impression from the posts that a lot of Forumites know one another & as an outsider was wary of posting initially. The only person I knowingly know on the Forum is Graysons Column & he & I share a common bond that will stay with us for ever!
Anyway, I like this Forum & long may it continue.September 9, 2007 at 03:01 #114102As one of the ‘old’ girls who used to post alot on here – I am still around and reading the forum as much as ever. I am a girl I suppose it’s the names, I can’t really tell who’s female or male here – well a few I can Grassy’s avatar gives him away a bit and Corm’s a Hibby and GC is Jeremy and there’s Colin and Simon, hmmmmmmmmm quite a few actually

I’ll geta copy for you and you can buy a drink at the local pub when I return to Blighty
IM me your address. I’ll get one of the nice IT guys at work to do it next weekSeptember 9, 2007 at 10:03 #114113hey KT, thank you so much
are you at work today?by the way, do you know jockeys Hugh Bowman and Kerrin McEvoy?, they’re both riding over here now. I prefer Kerrin as I think he’s stronger in a finish, if I’m having a bet. Just wondered what you thought. I don’t know if they’ve ever ridden in Singapore, they usually do don’t they?
September 9, 2007 at 10:10 #114115You’re very welcome
Yes I know both of them – Kerrin is much the better rider far more of an all rounder than Hugh is, but Hugh is very good in his own right.
Neither have ridden here while I’ve been here but I’ve known Hugh since he was a little apprentice at Bathurst.
I think Kerrin is much more used to the way of European riding – Hugh’s a bit of a slather and whack bloke. They don’t call the Aussies windmills for nothing.Yes am working today – we have Hong Kong and Penang races to do Good to have HK back but Penang on an atrocious heavy track is torture
