…will this finally prove that her sporting connections have been ducking Big Buck’s all along?
I know that in fairness, money wasn’t an issue as one gets more for finishing second in the Stayers than first in the mares race.
But I do hope for the sake of consistency and their credibility she goes for a fifth David Nicholson. Otherwise it will be Santa Clause, God and the Easter Bunny all over again.
December 18, 2012 at 10:55 #423375You coudn`t blame them for ducking Big Bucks. He is something special but so is the mare. As long as we see her in something I will be happy and the stayers would be interesting
December 18, 2012 at 11:12 #423377Undoubtedly they have been avoiding Big Bucks to now and I don’t expect to see her in the mares race.
Surely this must tempt connections of Oscar Whisky back in for another tilt?

I don’t think they’ve ever claimed otherwise. In a recent interview Mullins was at pains to state that if you have a mare like her capable of winning the mares’ race every year, why go looking for a horse to beat her. I’d say they’ll definitely be tempted now, and I hope they go for it.

December 18, 2012 at 15:13 #423400I don’t think Nicky Henderson will be keen to run Oscar Whisky in the World Hurdle. He said that the horse was "very wobbly and distressed" after the race last year.

He did indeed say that. But last week I read a quote where he said that on reflection he cannot accept that OW did not stay that day and he inferred the horse was amiss.
Going on that, and the fact that he has at least one solid CH contender in his yard, I think 7/1 Oscar Whisky for the WH is way too high.
December 18, 2012 at 17:31 #423410I was about to refer to the same quote, he said it in the post after the race Saturday.
QUOTES:
Nicky Henderson, trainer of
Oscar Whisky
: "When he goes a decent gallop like that how can he not get 3m? I still can´t have it and don´t worry we are not saying we are going three mile hurdling again because we are not but I can´t believe there wasn´t something wrong with him that day in March."
With the news of Big Bucks he must seriously be re-considering the latter half of that statement! Never say never and all that…
December 18, 2012 at 17:39 #423411If Quevega were to take the World Hurdle option would this mean we’d actually see her out before the festival? Surely Willie couldn’t send her straight to a race like that without a prep run? Granted it’s worked in the past, but it would surely be a huge risk in what could end up being quite a competitive race if various other connections decide to focus their attentions on this race.

And reported by Press Assoc at 7.21pm:
But Mullins reportedly told OLBG on Tuesday that Quevega will again be primed for the mares-only race which she has won for the last four seasons.
"She’ll be going for the OLBG and not the World Hurdle," the County Carlow handler said.
Yet 7s still freely available Oscar Whisky!

December 18, 2012 at 21:35 #423465Quevega for the Mares Hurdle! Exciting stuff!
