Simply poor journalism. Plain and simple. No excuses in my opinion.

I think is pretty unkind to call someone an idiot for making a mistake. Everyone makes them.

Yes thewexfordman it was an embarrassing mistake on the usually excellent RUK. Kate’s expertise is very much in the areas of the Flat and the racehorse as an animal so I was rather taken aback to find her the course analyst for a Saturday Jumps card. The homework she had done lacked feel for the Jumps but the blame must lie with whoever scheduled her appearance in preference to several alternatives that may have been available. What next? James Willoughby as the analyst at Ascot on Saturday! Sometimes I wish RUK had separate streams for Jumps and Flat.

I also admit I thought Enda Bolger was a woman and called Edna

To this day I thought the trainers name was Edna too and that he was a woman…..at least now I know haha :good:

Made that mistake constantly until around 6 months ago and always double take.

To be fair, Kate Sigsworth does a lot of work with retraining of racehorses and doesn’t bet, so judges horses more on how they look in the paddock and how they are in the prelims. Really nice girl.

Bloke I met at the races once told me “this Andrea is the best lady jockey around”.

    hahaha

I would always double check with such names if I were on TV before making such a mistake. I wouldn’t call her an idiot because of that one time.

So on that basis why on earth is she peddling herself as a pundit? She doesn’t have to accept the gigs.

I’m sorry, but Seeyouatdmidnight has been a “talking horse” since he turned over Regal Encore over hurdles. Since then Sandy Thomson has been interviewed on many occasions on the racing channels, and there was a great c4 piece about him prior to the RSA in March.

I grew up watching the likes of Sandy Jardine (a key figure in Scottish football), and then there the Sandy Struthers owned Scottish Rifle and Pitcairn. Oh, and of course Sandy Barclay who rode as the retained jockey at Warren Place for a couple of seasons..

Granted, Sandy Shaw was a famous female singer, but we are in a sporting forum here, so I think the original poster is well within his rights to flag this one up. On balance the presenter/pundit to whom you are all referring made a bit of a rick on this one.

Alexander and Alastair/Alistair/Alasdair are frequently shortened to Sandy aren’t they? Hence Sandy being a common name in Scotland

It was Sandie Shaw by the way; which would be a useful gender differentiation if generally used, but many Sandras become Sandys

The remit of the mainstream media, be that RUK, BBC, Tabloid or Broadsheet, is to feed the masses who don’t know a great deal about anything a diet of opinion dressed up as truth and fact viz half-truths, warped fact and shoddy research

If one is fortunate enough to know quite a lot about something then it’s inevitable that one’ll have to put up with glaring errors when exposed to talking heads on the goggler, white noise on the wireless and weasel words in print

    Beware the ‘expert’

If you read Racing UK’s booklet (new one) which gets delivered through the post if you’re a member, Graham Cunningham admits he too once referred to Sandy Thomson as a woman.

RUK test carried a story this week about John Hales, how Politologue could be the next One Man, and how he had had several top class performers since the retirement of the dashing grey. I thought that was pretty shabby. Was Kate Sigsworth a top event rider once?

Sandy , especially when used as a shortened version of Alexander in Scotland, has now become a name of the past . Sandy has now been thrown in the dustbin of history , to be replaced by the modern , yet quite hideous sounding Zander ; a grotesquque moniker favoured by the trendy designer beard and tight jeans wearing , younger generation Scottish male . Sandy is quite simply , for the Scottish born Alexander, a definite no no ! :-(
