You should send off for a no-win-no-fee claim form, for the ancestrally offended.
March 28, 2007 at 06:55 #104979.. drop Ken Livingstone a line and find out. I think he’s got shut of his, he was on the telly last week apologising, must be from when he was running the GLC.
March 28, 2007 at 11:44 #104980I take it many of you will have seen the news last night, with that fellow running to within a few feet of the Queen and demanding an apology for the slave trade.
"How hard is an apology?" He said.
I’d say fairly difficult, not to mention redundant, for something that your great-great-great grandfather did, matey.
You could hear his voice cracking by the end, he was just so desperate to hear that apology from the Queen and the PM. Then, and only then, would the suffering endured by his ancestors go away.
What a pathetic excuse for a human being.
March 28, 2007 at 23:13 #104981I would like to say what I think of Ken Livingstone, but the swear censor might go into meltdown.
If you hate him one tenth as much as I do, the least you could do is sign this.
Petition to limit the power of Ken Livingstone
(Edited by Ted at 12:16 am on Mar. 29, 2007)
March 29, 2007 at 12:18 #104982It’s in there along with such notable petitions as
Replace the National Anthem with ‘Gold’ by Spandau Ballet
OR
Extend the London Underground to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club
OR
Enter Ultimate Frisbee in the 2012 Olympics
and so the list goes on!
The Tottenham supporter who submitted one of the above mentioned may be slightly peeved that the list of ‘Rejected Petitions’ include one to
‘close down Arsenal Football Club’!

March 29, 2007 at 18:40 #104983I think you need to apologise rob for being a spurs fan!
And stevevd.
That was funny, but a bit harsh.
For the record, I have nothing against black african people.
I think everyone should own one!
April 19, 2007 at 20:09 #104984What really gets my goat is the constant reminder of the 6m Jews killed in the holocaust and I’m not saying that we shouldn’t be reminded. But there is never any mention internationally of the Irish Famine.
Population of Ireland prior to the famine was 8m and after it was only 4m. Now for those of you who know little about it 4m didn’t all die, alot emigrated. Thousands died crossing the Atlantic to America, in what were known as coffin ships. Disease and starvation were rife on board. Corpses were uncerimoniously dumped over board.
An apology is not expected or requested by the Irish people( for whom I do not speak ) as it would be both unreasonable and pointless.
A little acknowledgement would be very appreciated though.

April 21, 2007 at 11:04 #104985Heffo, there’s no getting away from the fact that the Irish famine was a disastrous event and much merited opprobium is directed at the English for their part in it.
But the English (if it is them you want an apology from) that made the conditions worse during the famine were also the same English (i.e those in power, with wealth and with land) who were also culpable for much of the poverty and hardship endured by their fellow Englishman; it wasn’t a racial thing (unlike the Holocaust). There was famine and hardship across most of the world in those days too; the Irish (or the blacks come to that), don’t have a monopoly on hardship and woe. Some nations / races want to forever wear the badge of suffering, whilst others just get on with life.
April 21, 2007 at 15:35 #104986Insomniac,
I’m not saying that the English should apologise for something that happened 160 years ago.
Our own government, both past and present, should hang their heads in shame for not creating a SIGNIFICANT day of rememberance.
I take your point about the ‘badge of suffering’ but feel that remembering as a mark of respect and not out of self pity is justified.
Also the fact it wasn’t racial doesn’t excuse not intervening, and some what, even compounding the disaster. There were some disgraceful acts during the famine. People( many were irish upper and middle classes) used the opportunity to get rich, similar to those unscrupolous scumbags who did the same during the holocaust. The Catholic church, who have held a very powerful position in this country to such extent that they were asked to approve our constitution, stood back and did little. Then again that seems to be their FORM as they showed with how they handle the problems caused by their paedophile priests.
Of course you’re spot on in pointing out how English people of the poorer classes were also suffering at the time. Even in the richest countries there is poverty.
Look at the ‘Leaders of the Free World’, those at the front line in their War for OIL in Iraq are mostly from the poorest areas of the U.S. and will be those who will benifit the least from the ill gotten gains.
Of course it’s easy to criticise the actions or lack of action by those in the history books. Many of us are guilty of doing little for the poor and hungry around the planet.
I make monthly contributions to a couple of charities which combined are but a tiny fraction of the amount I gamble weekly.
I’ll leave it at that because I’m getting saddle sore on my high horse.
Heffo.
April 22, 2007 at 01:26 #104987I know what you’re saying, Heffo, the Irish Famine was a terrible thing. But there’s a couple of things that prevent it being so keenly regretted. 1) It happened a long time ago (ie outwith living memory) and 2) The Irish aren’t an ethnic minority, and thus (to the mamby-pamby ar$es who create these pi$hy bandwagons) deserve less sympathy.

It’s the pits !
You feel as if you are in transit – you just have to leave !
It’s all traffic and not much else. You can believe the hype if you want to…
‘Camberwell is a multicultural neighbourhood home to a campus of the University of the Arts London. Pizzerias, Chinese takeaways, and Mediterranean tavernas line busy Camberwell Church Street, and art students are trapped in fake Victorian pubs or sprawl on the grass at Camberwell Green park just wishing they were somewhere else. Myatt’s Fields Park has tarmac tennis courts and a kids’ splash pad. The intimate Blue Elephant Theatre stages dance and contemporary drama but there is one thing you cannot get away from… You’re in a gritty desert and you want to escape !
Get away !
November 12, 2022 at 04:43 #1622639There is, I believe a butterfly called a Camberwell Beauty. Not just one of course, quite a few of them, wonder how many?
Just had a little Google. Apparently they are migrants from Europe, the cheeky little buggers!
