Steve Taplin’s 2 year old book is again an exellent source of 2 year old winners.
In the ones he suggested to follow before any had ever seen a racecourse many won 1st time out and some are favourite for Royal Ascot races. The majority have already won at least one race.
There is always work to do as many are un named at the time the book goes to press but the website does give out the names and it is never much of a problem writing the names in later.
The one complaint is the quality of the paper used.
Whilst Steve Taplin has access to many of the top trainers and most give candid views of the 2 year old they are training the one exception is Paul Cole who never seems to have any of his 2 year olds in these excellent books.
My friend e mailed Steve Taplin as to why he never has any of Coles 2 year olds and the reply was.
Whilst I always contact Paul Cole every year his answer is always that he is not interested in contributing anything.
My only concern is for my owners and no one else.
Now whilst many jounalist may use Taplins views when having to write up about un raced 2 year olds and in a way possibly shorten odds on some of them this dated view of how to treat those that pay the most for horse racing.
June 4, 2009 at 11:10 #231875Do trainers get paid for their contribution? Why should Paul Cole or any other trainer contribute to profit for Steve Taplin?
He nearly always has a trainer file in The Post or Weekender.
Incidentally, do all other top trainers contribute too the book? eg Michael Stoute, Mark Johnston, John Gosden etc.
From the horses he recommends what is the profit/loss to a pound level stake?June 4, 2009 at 15:37 #231928Good point Seagull and the stupidity, shortsightedness and plain ignorance of certain trainers never ceases to amaze. Their understanding of the wider economic reality of the sport would be make a 14 year old CSE student economics laugh and cry at the same time
Worth noting that, Aidan O Brien (probably more down to the opeation than the trainer himself), Stoute and Johnston give only the very bare bones too
yeats….Gosden certainly gives good summaries as anyone who follows this trainer would expect.
But hes an intelligent bloke

Is everything about money?
If the likes of Richard Hannon , Mick Channon William Haggas,John Gosden etc etc can shed some light as to what they think of the 2 years old in their care why should P.Cole think its a secret.Dont buy the book just look at what those trainers put foward as the ones to follow.
quids in so farJune 4, 2009 at 17:07 #231960Am I right in thinking that every horse in there is sure to win a race according to their trainer? The pedigrees are worth having, but the trainer comments need treating with a pinch of salt, but then I’ve never placed anywhere near the amount of faith in trainer comments as others who post here.

I’m still trying to get over someone putting faith in anything Mick Channon has to say.
It’s obvious that some trainers don’t want to give punters the time of day when it comes to the chances of their horses – we all know who they are – but on the flip-side there are a handful of trainers whose ‘input’ is fairly meaningless (a la Clive Brittain and his seemingly never ending stream of would be superstars, or Mark Johnston’s craving for camera time without having anything meaningful to fill it with – other than to reiterate that their ‘always trying’ of course).
June 4, 2009 at 17:21 #231965Johnston craving for camera time? He’s hardly spoken to the media since 48 hr decs were brought in.

Perhaps it has been a year or two since his hovering was at its peak, but it never ceased to amaze me how often he (Johnston) could be seen lurking when there was a camera around. Not that he was any use, of course, merely keeping up appearances and reciting his favourite two words.
June 4, 2009 at 18:07 #231974I see Braveheart has the odds-on jolly in the first here. WIth 6/1 available about it being unplaced I think the hour’s wait could have been worth it!
June 4, 2009 at 18:21 #231975Oh dear. That’s just a choker for anyone banking on the creature in their placepot.

June 4, 2009 at 18:36 #231977I find it astonishing that anyone would not want to know what the trainer thinks of any horse. Of course they say they expect them to win races. They can hardly say otherwise, but it doesnt take a huge degree of kremlinology to read between the lines with many trainers comments
Knowing the trainer’s manner is important of course, but where else are you goiing to get any indicator at all of a 2 year olds ability?
June 4, 2009 at 19:09 #231979Pedigree and trainer’s strike rates and/or historical patterns would be far more use. Is there ever an instance of a trainer of a fto juvenile not saying he’ll come on for the run?
June 4, 2009 at 20:08 #231992So what?
Trip and going means more than jockey bookings to me for instance. But doesnt mean i dont want to know whos riding
June 4, 2009 at 20:36 #231995More people blinded by Gosden’s authoratative posh voice equating to talking sense.
Listening to him speak you would think he was the world’s leading authority on all things racing, when the reality is that he is a competent trainer who has done moderately with some of the finest bloodstock money can buy.

Not blind, Smithy – just discerning!

The most media friendly and informative of all the flat trainers, and thought enough of by Sheikh Mo to bring him back from a successful career in the states to train in this country.
Anyone who thinks they can’t learn from trainers, is probably incapable of learning from anyone.June 4, 2009 at 22:09 #232007His interview after the 1000 guineas was generous, informative and interesting. Given the circumstances, it was a great effort. Nothing to do with a "posh voice"
