Quote: from Zoz on 9:36 pm on Oct. 7, 2005[br]Arctic Monkeys sound great live GC, lively and confident, and if it gives you any inclination as to the type of audience they command I believe that the label that signed Franz Ferdinand (good second album btw) paid their record fee to sign them.

Maybe a cross between FF and The Strokes? Lyrically very clever and sharp with catchy guitars.

I fear it must be a different Arctic Monkeys atop the hit parade, then, as I really cannot stand either I Bet You Look Good… or anything else I’ve heard to date, alas. Far too much like those blasted Libertines for my liking. The idea is good enough – the whole Streets-like oikish thing set to guitars – but the execution is not. Ah well (polishes zimmer frame, collects pension).

Ah well each to their own….but….Libertines-like?!

Maybe we are listening to different bands! I can’t bloody stand the Libertines!

My fave song of the year, It’s All In My Mind by durable old veterans Teenage Fanclub, finally gets a single release today. It probably won’t chart, as none of their last half dozen singles have and this one is self-released, but its rocks my little world. The album Man-Made is a feast of fuzzy guitars and gorgeous harmonies also.

As it’s the time of year when all sense goes out of the window of the world’s radio stations and music channels, who suddenly seem to assume we all want to hear Slade at least twelve times a day for the next three weeks, I thought I’d put in a good word for some of the better musical offerings put out there this year.

This does not, repeat NOT, include anything by Razorlight.

    Or The Feeling.

For they are both a bit evil.

Admittedly I made quite a noise about the Arctic Monkeys when they first started releasing singles, but how they won the Mercury Award against Muse’s Black Holes and Revelations is beyond me.

To paraphrase what they put on the cover of Q recently regarding Alex Turner, he’s not the messiah, he’s a gobby teenager from Sheffield who happens to be able to play the guitar.

So here’s Zoz’s alternative music awards for the year:

Album of the year – Muse
Live Act of the Year – didn’t get to see Muse but would nominate them, The Rolling Stones and on a lesser known level, The Delays who were brilliant in Cambridge earlier this year.
New artist of the year – Paolo Nutini
Most Annoying New Act – Lily Allen. Grr. Grrr I say.

The Special Zoz Award For The Person Zoz Would Most Like To See Dropped Off The Face Of The Planet – this year’s candidates are Lily Allen, Sir Paul McCartney, Mr Borrell from bloody Razorlight, Jamelia and that other one for their crimes against sampling old songs, Robbie Williams for having the sheer audacity for continuing to exist.

Okay I’m making up these categories at random, any one else have any opinions?

My opinion is that you can’t slate the arctic monkeys and then put up Paolo Nutini!! But I completely agree about Robbie Williams and Razorlight. I saw Razorlight play Alexandra Palace and whilst the guy can sing he’s a complete nob. I’m not sure he quite grasps what being a frontman is about.

Best live act would be Humanzee. If you get the chance to see them do.. Also a band called Mohair are worth a look live..

Album of the year the arctic monkeys. Best thing i’d heard since definitely maybe. ( I got a new copy of Blue Lines by Massive Attack as well, which is the best trip hop album there is)

My Own special category would be worst live act and the award would go to Hard-Fi… Complete let down. The album must have taken them forever to produce..

    Most overrated band: Muse.
My daughter adores them and said their concert at MEN in M’cr was brilliant, but after hearing any 3 of their songs in succession, I feel like I want to strangle them: or perhaps it’s just ‘cos I’m getting old.

Must be an age thing, Insomniac ;)

I didn’t slate the Monkeys as such, I just feel they’re massively overrated and in danger of believing it…getting into Johnny Borrell territory there…dangerous stuff!

What I’ve heard of Humani/Humanzee I like, not heard of Mohair though.

Paolo Nutini was surprisingly good as a support act when I saw him, did really well before the Stones came on which was no mean feat given he was playing to a packed Sheffield stadium, full of people who had no idea who the hell he was.

Zoz I could have written your post for you! I agree with almost everything you said about:
Muse: definitely band/album/gig of the year. Yes I did go and see them recently and they are just effing awesome! Mindblowing, I can’t get enough of them! And Chris Wolstenholme is HOT!

Lily Allen….oh don’t get me started! Grrrrr indeed. The same goes for any young, slightly ‘cute’ girl singer who thinks she’s the best thing that ever happened to music and/or men.

Same for Robbie Williams. Oh God! WHY do all my workmates like him? WHY???
Arctic Monkeys……yes they were clever and new a different once. Now they’re just dull.
Along with Paul McCartney, I’d like to drop U2, Oasis, Razorlight, all those hip hop guys that go "ugh" at the start of all their identical ‘songs’ and then go on to gabble about such things as ‘lady lumps’…….
and Katie Price and Peter Andre off the planet.

I’m liking MCR I have to say and I did have a phase of liking Panic! at the Disco but I’m getting a bit bored of them now. they’re a bit of a novelty band like the Darkness were. Brilliant lyrics and performances though.

Can’t think of anything else right now but I’m sure I will!

Arcade Fire or were they 2005, not sure but bloody great anyway.

Sigur Ros – Got their album recently, not sure, but think it was a 2006 release. Anyhow, they are Icelandic and I haven’t a scooby what the feck they’re on about but it’s a beautiful sound.

Can’t have this bad mouthing of the Arctic Monkeys, that album is still sounding great despite me playing it to death.

I like everything I have heard from The View but that only amounts to 3 songs so far…..very promising start.

I apologise for intruding on this thread and it’s not somewhere I would normally linger, and for my ignorance on such matters but have any of you heard of the following group and the song :

    O-Zone : Dragostea Din Tei

I think it was released a couple of years ago, they are a Romanian group [?] and I just love this little number. Probably not anyone’s cup of tea on here, and I’m sure it’s more of a Eurovision Song Contest type, but hey! what do I know ? I love it!!!!……

However, now I’ve mentioned it I fully expect it to be amongst all your playlists:biggrin:
Funereal was definitely 2005 at the latest. And yes, I await new material from them equally keenly.

Arctic Monkeys make joyless, ugly music for joyless, ugly NME readers. Can’t remember having found a successful guitar band so devoid of artistic merit since Oasis first broke in ’94.

Actually, can we just drop NME off the face of the planet?

Or at least dump the journalists and take over.

How many times do they build up a band to either idolise them and bang on and on about how we should all worship at their feet, or pounce to rip them down again.

For example: interview with The Bravery last year, before putting them on their Awards show tour at the Astoria, and then nominating them for just one award…worst album, and letting Brandon bloody Flowers from The Killers lay into them at every opportunity, trying to suggest a bit of a scrap between the two bands when The Bravery’s only response seemed to be something resembling a small nonchalant shrug.

    Grow up!

Muse are okay as far as they go, but you might as well listen to the real Radiohead

I’m getting old and tend only to listen to the first 3 Manics albums on a continuous loop these days, but I did hear the Fratellis the other day and found them mildly diverting.

    Razorlight. Tedium personified.
