Three of those , no mention of any problem last race in comments , one vet checked and fine . Just very slow horses beaten out of sight last run .

I’ve noticed that too, HCMW. It seems to happen in roughly 30-50% of the Irish fatalities.
But, I don’t think there is a law which could prevent you from putting a poor performer down. We all see how many times this happens during a year.
Augustine Leahy has had so many horses put down about two years ago, he only has on NH horse for the entire 2023/2024 season. The horse is o from 8, so we know what might await him.

May they all rest in peace

Its not a good look , but i guess only so many homes to go to . I accept some unsuitable for rehoming to but these stats do seem odd . I smell a rat when 3 run aweful last start , have no form , no mention of injury and are now gone . Maybe a statistical blip !!

I thought, it’s OK it’s Cerberus, he’s a JP horse so hopefully he’ll be safe as, although being trained by Leahy and not winning are risk factors for appearing on the death list, being owned by JP seemed to have a protective effect. Now I see that he is now in the colours of the Leahys. I hope he’s just leased or something and reverts back to JP’s ownership, or he’ll probably be for the chop like the rest.

That sent a chill down my spine green. Why would JP even let one of his horses anywhere near someone like Leahy. Like you I hope he’s Ok.

Not quite HRI list but I have been desperately trying to find out about the welfare of Rakeez who went amiss in the 5.00 at Meydan last Friday and was pulled up by Tadhg O’Shea, the race was won by Siskany. Hoping that no news is good news but I can’t find one bit of information about him and not sure where to look.

RIP all the HRI horses :rose:

I wonder if the powers that be had a word after the cull of ’20-’21 when half of his stable were listed as dead shortly after running badly. He had several horses that ran abysmally in the subsequent seasons and haven’t run again but aren’t listed as dead. So either they are frolicking in the fields in lovely new careers as racehorse to riding horse types, or Leahy took the bad look off the cull by officially taking them out of training/selling them to a dealer/ whatever you do to whitewash the chop.

“Why would JP even let one of his horses anywhere near someone like Leahy.”

Leahy is from Limerick (well trains there anyway) and so, famously, is JP. I wonder if he had horses with him at the start of his ownership days. JP is also (famously) very loyal – he still sends expensive horses to Jonjo O’Neill who won a Cheltenham Gold Cup and a Grand National for him; Mark Walsh doesn’t get to take Henry’s JP horses from Rachel ever since she rode a Grand National winner for him, and so on. So maybe historical loyalty/reward thing.

That sounds a realistic practice. But tell me green, what about the British racehorses? On this forum we don’t get anything similar to the HRI list Ekbalco puts up every week. We only see the racecourse fatalities or the ones that die in retirement. What happens to the 800 gns horses that aren’t Hewick?
It is tragic to put them down, but still way better than shipping them on a container to SAF, North-Africa or anywhere else.

“But tell me green, what about the British racehorses?”

I was wondering that. I don’t think they’re all skipping around the fields. And what about the Irish racehorses, really? If there there are >8000 foals born (well, registered) in Ireland and >4000 in Britain, and this is a downward trend meaning numbers used to be higher, then at least 230 TBs of all ages born in the UK and Ire die every week. Those in racing/training, those who die in crap abattoirs with dodgy microchips, ones who die in better abattoirs (?…there are two horse abattoirs in Ireland, I have no idea what they’re like), ones who die overseas, ones who die here, neglected in filthy conditions or carefully cherished and finally peacefully euthansed at home when the time comes. The HRI list is good to have but it’s a drop in the ocean of outcomes, and the money, or the will to force the money, is not there to trace foals properly from cradle to grave.
