I was amazed how they let a top act like Murtagh slip through their hands in favour of Joseph at the time, but he has done well over the last year and improved massively since he started riding in public.
It looks quite a good fit between Aidan and Joseph at the moment it has to be said. I’m not sure its an ideal relationship for Ryan Moore unless he can get some quality time to get a vibe for the nuances of a few of the ones he will be on in the future however.April 29, 2012 at 23:30 #402550Time of the final race, (where they took Joseph’s route (although seemed to use the middle of turns not outer)) was significantly faster than the Esher Cup (where they kept towards the inner). Which suggests the "Route Of Joseph" was perhaps (on the whole) advantageous.
This point was also made by Jonathan Neesom, but fails to take into account that de Sousa basically dictated a modest gallop in the early stages on Grey Mirage before gradually winding it up, whereas the Silken Thoughts race was run at a sound pace throughout.
I’m not saying the ground wasn’t quicker around the outside, it almost certainly was, but comparing these 2 races as indicators of how much quicker is hugely misleading imo.
Fair point David, pace is a vitally important consideration in these things.
May be it would be fairer to say, the fact the time was
significantly
faster suggests it was not a disadvantage to go around the outer.
Value Is EverythingApril 30, 2012 at 14:02 #402576Hi Admiral, do you really think Heffo or Colm would have done less well on SNA in the Breeders Cup? The horse was so much better anyone could have won on him that day.Yes Joe had the nerve to stay calm.If you watch the race he got shuffled back to the rear of the field coming around the final bend. Incidentally the Eclipse was the only correct ride (Heffernan) that SoYouThink has gotten since he arrived here.
April 30, 2012 at 14:58 #402578Andy you are in denial if you think poor riding has been the cause of So You Think’s unerwhelming recent performances. With no disrespect to connections because I was rooting for the horse the whole way through. It appears he was a bit over-hyped and perhaps the opposition over middle distances in Australia is not as good as some think. Evidence of that would be My Kingdom of Fife who was a mediocre handicapper in the UK and has gone on to win several G2’s and a G1 in Oz.
A brilliant horse will win in spite of bad riding (Eg. Frankel -ST James Palace). Lots of jockeys make mistakes because they are under pressure all the time, they are only human, and they are dealing with an animal that sometimes just does not want to play ball. I remember when Johnny was stable jockey there in the second season he got a hard time for not being able to pick the ride horse in the yard. People have short memories. Joey is doing well for his age and considering he’s under immense pressure.
