Another grade 1 winning mare for Mullins, Stormy Ireland, who we discussed plenty a couple of pages back in this thread.
Her best performance of her career, but only 25 days after her previous run Ginger?
May 1, 2021 at 18:13 #1539234Aye, that Paul Nicholls has obviously got no idea. No other explanation for it.

May 1, 2021 at 18:23 #1539238BTW sad to see Laurina folding so easily. When you think that she absolutely hammered Minella Indo on their chasing debuts…..
May 1, 2021 at 19:12 #1539247Time for her to head to the sheds. Who knows what is wrong, but she could be in pain.

May 1, 2021 at 19:23 #1539249Agree TTC. She should have been allowed to retire gracefully a while ago.
May 3, 2021 at 16:10 #1539634I see a vet was caught with substances in his car here and was suspended, but the vet didn’t mention that he was instructed by the trainer so that clears the trainer in that scenario

May 3, 2021 at 18:01 #1539649There is some interesting reading material on there Louise, thanks.

May 5, 2021 at 16:52 #1539800Do you really think so, TWM?
The odds on favourite massively disappointing. Stormy Island – the clear second fav @ 7/2 wins… With the only other horse to start at single figures (8/1) falling. Just because a horse wins its first Grade 1 does not necessarily mean it’s the “best performance of her career”. Sometimes far from it.The 5+ week thing isn’t really about consistent horses that show their form one run to the next or horses away from the top top class. It’s about horses showing improved form after a 5+ week break that are unable to show that form again unless the trainer has another break to do whatever they need to do in those 5 weeks. Obviously all bar one or two of these horses won’t run before that 5 weeks is up because the trainers know they won’t show their form.
How many Cheltenham winners went on to even run at Aintree, let alone win / show their Cheltenham form there?
Value Is EverythingMay 5, 2021 at 19:51 #1539815Interesting site Louise. Many thanks. A bit harsh on Mahler who has produced some proper jumps horses (albeit they didn’t run that well at Cheltenham this year) mind you. I always thought that the dominance of Galileo would cause long term issues but I hadn’t appreciated the potential damage to the Irish NH bloodstock industry (given so many Irish stallions are now his sons or grandsons). Santiago seems like one with potential pedigree-wise. Hopefully they won’t geld & flog him to Australia.
May 5, 2021 at 21:23 #1539820Glad you both liked that site. It’s important to get the independent view, with so much of the media commercially tethered to the big operations. I actually agree on Mahler, Tonge – always thought he was the one Galileo NH sire that got mud splattered chasers. Overall, though, we are losing all the tough stuff that you need for the job.
May 5, 2021 at 23:40 #1539821Point taken Ginger, she possibly has a better performance than her grade 1 last week. But it’s marginal.
Beating Franco de Port by equivalent of 4 lengths she was given a rating of 153.
June 4, 2021 at 18:37 #1543589So same case even in flat season. 3 classics so far and all 3 went to Ireland
How much behind has Irish racing left us? Well, 16 lengths behind
#SnowfallJune 4, 2021 at 18:54 #1543596Demise of the owner breeder has hit British trainers hard, Austin. Death of Prince K and Sheikh H won’t make things any easier either. Another TRFer (forget who) made a recent comment about the vast majority of John Gosden’s power coming from old owner breeders. However, will Coolmore be able to stay so clearly at the top if struggling to find a successor to the stallion machine line of Saddlers Wells and Galileo? Frankel (who’s not Coolmore) seems Galileo’s successor in waiting. Coolmore went for Deep Impact and he’s given them a winner today, but DI is no longer with us.
Value Is EverythingJune 4, 2021 at 19:03 #1543601Well said Ginger..very aptly put. I am also surprised to see no runner for Johny G in either Oaks/Derby. He is suppose to be our best trainer but more content to send his runners to France.
June 4, 2021 at 19:34 #1543610Ginger,
The owner/breeder comment was from me, as part explanation of why Gosden senior rated his hand over to his son as something of a hospital pass, since Junior won’t have that stady stream of good horses on tap.
The Oaks today was a prime example of successful breeding by the owners. In fact the result has an oddity that may be unique, as the second dam of the winner, Red Evie, is also the dam of the third, Divinely. Which in human terms would be the niece winning with her aunt in third! Red Evie was also the dam of Found, so however much Coolmore paid for her, she has returned it with interest.
Coincidentally, one of the earlier offspring of Red Evie and Galileo, called Iniesta, ended up running in low grade handicap chases for my current trainer, Michael Blake.
