It’s only human to form impressions over time, but if the actual stats do not back up our impressions they need to be re-evaluated.

Statistics may be likened to bikinis: what they reveal can be very interesting, but what they conceal is vital.

As wexfordman put it right, it was a very weak G2 with The Bosses Oscar turned out again after a pretty hard race at Cheltenham. She also seems to like the spring time more than the winter. So why would it be a surprise for a 7/2 shot to win such contest?

The only decent mare I remember from the Nicholls stable was L’Aventure who was rated at around 140 and who also won a Welsh National in a year in which the stable had the first three home in the race.

Half a story being told here. How many filly / mares hurdlers has swell head Nicholls trained compared to Mullins? Mullins and connections have quite obviously targeted the cursed Mares races, whilst Nicholls seems more of a traditionalist.

I’d agree about the traditionalist angle; he’s all about training chasers. Any decent novice hurdler he has is a future chaser; ..”anything he wins over hurdles is a bonus…” How many times have we heard that? His Gd1 Aintree 4yo winner is never going to be a champion hurdler, he’s got chaser all over him.

Fair points Andy, agreed. I’ve always assumed (rightly or wrongly) that he does so because there is more prize money in chases than hurdles.

Makes it a redundant point about Nicholls and a lack of 2m hurdlers.

Given the weakness of the 2m hurdling division in England, i’d say there’s plenty of hurdling prize money very easy to pick up. I still struggle to think of many Nicholls hurdlers that have stayed in the open category and don’t anything of note, in recent times anyway.
It’s his choice clearly, but when a trainer like WPM excels in these races, i think it’s fair to suggest he’s currently more at home with training them as well.

I mean given WPM has taken so long to win a Gold Cup and still has no QMCC, you’d wonder why the medication hasn’t worked? Eh TTC?

I also wonder why it’s taken Henry so long to get a hold of the magic dose too…

To be fair to myself, I suggested it as a guess when pressed for a reason. I’m not sat here in a foil hat accusing anyone in a serious manner.

But I certainly wouldn’t rule it out with any certainty. Where there’s muck there’s brass, and where there’s brass there’s certainly muck. PED’s are rampant in all of sport. If its institutionalised doping like cycling or athletics, or Tyson Fury testing positive for Nandrolone (for eating too much Wild Boar, apparently, aye pull t’other one), it is everywhere.

I admit the huge improvements in Irish racing, Jim Bolgers comments, the Byrne case, and Stormy Irelands immediate return to top form, make me curious. But obviously I have no firm idea either way.

Yesterday provided a prime example of why our trainers can’t compete. There was a sale of mainly Irish point to point and bumper horses at Newmarket (switched from Cheltenham). Thirty three horses changed hands for a total of just over £2M.

Gordon Elliott bought six of those thirty three lots and laid out a total of £700,000, which by the time you add the auction house commission (6%) and the cost of returning the horses to Ireland, will cost three quarters of a million.

Eighteen lots were sold for less than £60,000 each – Elliott didn’t buy any of those, happy to let the local trainers fight over the scraps.

Interesting AP. The big hitters certainly seem to want to spend their cash and send them to Irish trainers, and who can honestly blame them?

I couldn’t make head nor tail of Dan Skeltons recent comments. Irish horses had an advantage at Cheltenham due to Mullins “basically getting freebies” in races prior to the Festival. Absolute nonsense, the Dublin Festival was more competeitive and of a better quality than anything we have provided this side of water all season wasn’t it? Whats he droning on about?

Skelton might have done better at Cheltenham if his brother – Britain’s Champion Jockey, no less – had the faintest idea how to ride the track.

Given the Irish domination, is everyone lumping on Plan of Attack today?

Austin your great forefather Saint Austin was a holy monk who was sent in to England, to preach the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ. My own forefather Bishop Milner although not achieving such high holy status as yours, did risk life and limb and high seas in just a flimsy rowing boat to reach his holiness the Pope to pass on an urgent written message.

Accordingly St. Austin would have rephrased the title of this thread to enable easier entry into the kingdom of heaven, to read so.

‘How much has Irish racing left Britain behind ?’

rather than the angel shocking and devil clapping..

    ‘ How much behind… ?
